Just like you I have started things from scratch. RegCM(RCM) is a numerical approach of climate modeling which has been developed in ICTP. It took me some time to understand what the model does and the requirement for running the model. Researchers that are engaged in climate modelling and those who are interested in using Regional ClimateModel (RegCM) should know and have basic knowledge of 1. Unix/Linux operating system 2. Programming Language such as FORTRAN, 3.different data types such as NetCDF files, 4. some graphic software such as GrADS, Ferret, Surfer,Matlab/Octave and deep knowledge of statistics and Statistical software 5. the computer should be installed with the required Fortran Compiler (PGI or IFC) Here 1 and 5 are basic things must be fulfilled. In running the model you may use parallel mode or serial mode. you can run the model in your laptop for serial case incase if you have not able to get the cluster. It took me about 2 hours to run 1 month simulation on my laptop. so you can multiplay to get the time for 30 years simulation in your laptop. Hope this will help.
