Hi Konare,

Thanks for informing us of the START call for proposals in global change research in Africa.  This is particularly admirable of you since you may be reducing your chances of getting funded by doing so. :-)

This call for proposals seems to be an excellent opportunity for RegCNET scientists in Africa.  To summarize, the call focuses in the following areas:
In this round, priority will be assigned to proposals that focus on water issues and include aspects of food production systems, biogeochemistry, health, and vulnerability and adaptation.  They have about 10 awards available for up to $15,000 each.  The principle investigator(s) must be from African institutions and overseas partnerships are encouraged.  The body of the proposal should not exceed 5 pages and the deadline for submission is Friday, 9 September (very near).

I
t seems that your chances of funding would increase if you were to partner-up with an overseas institution.  We, at the ICTP, would like to offer our support and assistance to those wanting to write/submit proposals.  I suspect that there are many other RegCNETers from overseas institutions that are willing to do the same (which is why I have cc'ed the general RegCNET).  We, of course, would not be asking for any of the money, given the limited budget; however, it would be nice if you were to include some travel money in the budget to visit the partnership institute for a collaborative visit.

Given the close deadline (9 Sept), we will need to work fairly quickly.  For those interested in submitting, my suggestion at this stage would be to write-up an outline of your proposed project, within a week.
I would then send the outline to an overseas partnership institute that you have identified.  In the meantime, can those of you from overseas (non-African) institutes willing to partner-up, send an email to the RegCNET-AFRICA (regcnet-africa-owner@lists.ictp.it) expressing your interest?

Good luck to all!

Sincerely,

Jeremy

Dear colleague,

START, through funding from the United States Climate Change Science Project (Global Change Research Program), is pleased to announce the attached Call for Proposals. Proposals are being solicited from scientists based at African institutions for research projects related to:

1) Climate Change and Water Resources
2) Climate Variability and Climate Change in Africa
3) Impacts/Adaptations/Vulnerability to Global Change
4) Land Use and Ecosystem Change
5) Bio-geochemical Fluxes, and
6) Biodiversity.

Proposals must explicitly address priority issues identified in the frameworks of START's sponsoring programs (IGBP, IHDP, and WCRP) or of the Earth System Science Partnership.  In this round priority will be assigned to proposals that focus on water issues and include aspects of food production systems, biogeochemistry, health, and vulnerability and adaptation.

International collaboration is encouraged.  Proposals will be accepted until 09 September 2005 as per the attached instructions.  This information is also available through the START website: www.start.org

START would greatly appreciate your assistance in distributing this Announcement of Opportunity within your scientific networks.

Thank you,
Patricia Sipher
