James,
those are two distinct flags. One enables the transport and radiative effects
from tracers (ichem), the other enables the creation of an output file with the
tracer concentrations (ifchem). You may be interested to just consider dust
effects, without requesting the model to output the tri-dimensional mixing
ratios of all tracers, and you can do that setting ichem = 1 and ifchem =
.false. You set ifchem = .true. if you want the model to output also those
concentrations. BUT if you disable the transport and effects from tracers
(ichem=0), then the model prevents the creation of the empty output file.
