That is just a warning from grads, in our case does not block the plotting of 
the variables. Which version of grads are you using?

The soil moisture in the BATS is on two layers, so you must dig in and modify 
the scheme. For the precipitation, the question is not clear: the output file 
contains the precipitation rate in mm/sec, but from the unit of measure you are 
requesting how to obtain the precipitation amount. If this is the case, you are 
left with integrating over the required time interval the precipitation rate.
