Post-doc Researcher Vacancy

Available in the Earth System Physics (ESP) section of the Abdus Salam
International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), an IAEA/UNESCO
affiliated institute located in Trieste in northern Italy.

The position should bring oceanography expertise to ESP and is concerned
with the role of the ocean in determining seasonal, decadal and climate
predictability with an emphasis on the tropics and the three major
monsoon systems. Research topics may include the reduction of systematic
biases in coupled seasonal forecast and climate models or improving
ocean initialization methodologies to account for uncertainty in
ensemble seasonal to decadal predictions. It is envisaged that both
regional and global models will be used as research tools.

The candidate is expected to have a PhD and peer-reviewed publications.
Experience in running numerical ocean models and/or coupled
atmospheric-ocean models would be an advantage. The candidate is also
expected to enthusiastically contribute to ICTP’s stated mission to
support scientific activities in developing countries, both through
direct collaboration and also by active involvement in the planning and
execution of workshops and training activities at ICTP. There is also
the opportunity to teach an oceanography module in the recently
established ICTP Earth System Physics Diploma course.

ICTP offers internationally competitive remuneration. The position is
for an initial period of one year, renewable for up to an additional two
years.

Please submit a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae and a list of
publications, with refereed journal articles listed separately or
highlighted, to espvacan at ictp.it.

Deadline for applications: Oct 31st 2009.
