   There are two Research Scientist positions (Research Scientist and Senior
   Research Scientist) available in the Earth System Physics Section at the
   Abdus Salam ICTP in Trieste, Italy.

   1)
   Post title:             Research Scientist
   Organisational unit:    The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical
   Physics
   Duty station:           Trieste, Italy
   Grade:                  P-3

   Purpose of post:  To undertake world-class research and to assist the
   Head of the Earth System Physics Section in the planning and
   implementation of its scientific activities.

   Main responsibilities:  The incumbent will be required to perform the
   following duties:

   (a) Research: To undertake front-line research in Earth System
   Physics of which the following are relevant examples: long-term
   global and regional climate changes involving interactions between
   the atmosphere, ocean, land and biosphere; the Earth hydrologic
   cycle; climate change impacts on society and ecosystems; modeling of
   coupled Earth system processes from the global to the regional scale.

   (b) Programme coordination and training: To organize weekly seminars
   and journal clubs; to organize and supervise schools, workshops,
   conferences and topical meetings; to select participants.

   (c) Administrative responsibilities: (i) To assist the Head of the
   Section in the review of applications for postdoctoral work and
   Associateships, Diploma Courses, and short-term and long-term visits;
   (ii) to take responsibility for the visiting and training programme
   in areas of interest to the Earth System Physics section.

   (d) Teaching and mentoring: (i) To teach, as required, in Diploma
   Course Programs in Earth System Physics; (ii) to collaborate, as
   appropriate, with the Associates as well as other visitors to the
   Centre, especially those from developing countries.

   Profile:
   - Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral level in physics, geophysical
   sciences or related disciplines
   - Five or more years of post-doctoral research experience of which at
   least two are at the international level in any of the areas mentioned
   - Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
   - A positive attitude towards the international and multicultural
   characteristics of the assignment

   Conditions of employment: ICTP is a world-class institution focused
   on research in basic sciences with responsibility for the promotion,
   dissemination and support of science, especially in developing
   countries. It operates under the aegis of UNESCO and IAEA. This is an
   extra-budgetary position of a continuing nature but the duration of
   the appointment will be subject to the availability of funds.
   UNESCO's salaries are calculated in US Dollars. They consist of a
   basic salary and a post adjustment which reflects the cost of living
   changes in a particular duty station and exchange rates. For this
   post, the annual remuneration will start at US$ 78,874 if there are
   no dependants and at US$ 84,498 if there are dependants, exempt from
   income tax. There is an attractive benefits package which includes 30
   days of annual vacation, home travel, education grant for dependent
   children, pension plan and medical insurance. The Director retains
   full discretion to appoint the candidate at a lower level of the post.

   Purpose of post: To undertake and coordinate world-class research and to
   assist the Head of the Earth System Physics Section in the
   planning and implementation of his/her scientific activities.

   Main responsibilities:  The incumbent will be required to perform the
   following duties:

   (a) Research: To undertake front-line research in Earth System
   Physics of which the following are relevant examples: natural climate
   variability and predictability at temporal scale from intra-seasonal
   to multidecadal and spatial scales from global to regional; the role
   of the oceans in the climate system; modeling of the coupled Earth
   system, including atmosphere-ocean interactions.

   (b) Programme coordination and training: To coordinate and supervise
   the activities of the Section in the above research areas. Additional
   duties include the organization and supervision of weekly seminars,
   journal clubs, schools, workshops, conferences and topical meetings,
   and be responsible for the selection of participants.

   (c) Administrative responsibilities: (i) To review the applications
