Dear RegCNET Friends,
Burkhardt Rockel, David Williamson and I are convening a session
entitled "Generality of Climate Models and their Components" (session
CL9) at the EGU General Assembly, to be held 19-24 April 2008 in
Vienna. The aim of the session is to discuss how the performance of
global and regional climate models and parameterizations varies for
different regions of the world and different climate regimes. The
session description provides more details (see below).
Quite a few RegCNET participants are performing research that is
related to the session theme and we encourage you to submit abstracts
for the session. We point out especially that the "hypermatrix"
concept being executed in part through RegCNET is highly relevant to
the topic of this session.
Please note the abstract deadline is Tuesday, 13 January 2009.
Some links for the EGU assembly are given below following the session
description. If you would like to discuss whether an abstract would
be appropriate, or if you have other questions about the session,
please let me know. The EGU meeting is always interesting and Vienna
is a beautiful location. We look forward to seeing you there.
Regards,
Ray Arritt

CL9 Generality of climate models and their components
Climate models and their component parameterizations do not perform
equally well for all regions of the globe or for all climate regimes.
These disparities in model performance will become increasingly
important as demand grows for climate-change information on regional
scales. This session solicits contributions that explore the
generality of climate models and their components across varying
locations and across varying scales of space and time. Both global and
regional climate models as well as reanalyses and data assimilation
systems that use such models are relevant to this session. Examples of
appropriate contributions include but are not limited to comparisons
of model performance in different regions of the globe; independent
verification of reanalyses for different regions or climate regimes;
conflicts between the need for model "tuning" versus the conceptual
ideal of generality; performance of parameterizations across a range
of spatial scales; and relative performance of physical
parameterizations when applied to differing climate regimes.
Contributions that compare model performance across several GEWEX
Continental Scale Experiment (CSE) regions are especially encouraged.
