Hi All--
I just want to clarify that I do use PostProc'ed created netcdf files with
grads with no problems. I think this issue has been confused and
overstated a bit on the list in the past. If you have output in netcdf,
and you have a PDEF in your control files, you do need to create a data
descriptor file to get the projection displayed correctly, but this is no
more work than writing a standard grads control file (.ctl). We have
examples on the RegCNET web page.
See http://users.ictp.it/RegCNET/tut4.html
under the heading "view the output"
That stated, Bi's postprocessor is great alternative to PostProc. Also, we
still need to fix the max/min fields in the postproc, so if you want
averages for those fields, I would advise using Bi's programs.
My own personal preference is to have netcdf data because it is easy to
make averages and to do other manipulations using the netcdf operators
(NCO) or the climate data operators (CDO). These are really excellent
tools, but they work on netcdf data. See
http://nco.sourceforge.net/ (nco)
http://ccr.aos.wisc.edu/model/processing/#nco (nco tutorial I wrote in
grad school)
http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/fileadmin/software/cdo/ (cdo)
But others prefer to work with binary data and do everything in fortran.
That's perfectly fine. There are always many different ways to work and to
do things.
cheers
