Hi,

Hopefully this won't confuse anyone, but I thought I should point out
that there are some additional options for converting data from netCDF
to Grads binary (and vice versa) using Grads. We can add these to Bi's
excellent advice.

3. Open the netCDF files in grads, and use
set gxout fwrite
to write out the file in binary format (instead of using ncdump). You
will have to create a grads format control file. If you are already
familiar with this option in Grads then it might be easy for you to do.
You can see fwrite options at
http://grads.iges.org/grads/gadoc/gradcomdsetfwrite.html

4. Use the script lats4d.gs in Grads to write out the data in Grads
binary format. Lats4d is available at
http://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/software/lats4d/
and there are instructions for its use.

Lats4d is also a super-easy way to convert binary data that can be read
in Grads into netCDF format, so it's really worth checking it out. One
caveat: you cannot have "pdef" in your .ctl file when you go from binary
to netCDF, so if you have pdef you have to remove it and make a dummy
control file.

Let me know if you have questions.
