Hi Csaba,

I am not sure I understand the question - do you mean 6 hourly data to
actually run the model (create boundary conditions), or make annual
averages for comparison with model output?

If you have monthly data and want to go to annual, then you should most
correctly use a weighted average (you can do this in NCO with ncwa),
where every month is weighted by its number of days. In practice I am
not sure everyone does this, however.

There are several tools you can use to do this. One easy way to do it is
to use a tool called NCO (netCDF operators)

They have utilities like ncea which allow to you take a number of netCDF
files and average them. There's also a weighted averager (ncwa). If you
embed the commands in shell scripts you can automate the processing of
output quite well. When I was a grad student at Wisconsin I put together
some tutorials on NCO, and they have been added to since then. The web

Click on "data processing" (I think) on the left hand side and follow
the navigation links to the NCO pages.

If you are familiar with NCL (http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/), they have
built-in functions for doing this --
