Starting on Wednesday 23rd November SISSA Medialab will be running a series of 5 workshops on ENGLISH FOR SCIENTIFIC PURPOSES: WRITING AND PRESENTING YOUR RESEARCH. The workshops are free to ICTP researchers. The workshops wil be interactive and focused on your work in progress and ongoing needs. For example, we will work on all aspects of giving presentations, from designing a structure, choosing visuals, to clear pronunciation and articulation. We will use researchers' own examples to prepare an article for publication in a scientific journal, looking at all elements of the writing process, from title, keywords and abstract, to writing a clear and coherent sentence in English. It is important to stress that this is NOT a typical language course and is therefore also suited to mother tongue English speakers (who will also appreciate advice and feedback on how to present their research and and write for an international audience).

The teacher - Tonya Blowers - has a PhD in Literature from the University of Warwick (UK) and many years' experience teaching English as a Foreign Language and English for Scientists. She runs the Interdisciplinary Forum for PhD students 'Inspiring Science' at SISSA and is currently teaching 3 courses in Science for English to SISSA PhD students.

There will be two levels of course - Intermediate and Advanced. Both courses will cover similar material but the Intermediate course will also focus on revision of grammatical structures and will model some specific conversational situations for students to practise. The pace will be slower. The Advanced course will also include grammatical revision as and when participants require, but the course will place more emphasis on extending vocabulary. Researchers can choose which course level is more suited to them and can also try out both levels if preferred.

The workshops will run for 5 consecutive Wednesdays (starting 23rd November) in the L.Stasi Seminar Room at ICTP.
The Intermediate course is from 13.00 to 14.30.
The Advanced course is from 14.30 to 16.00.
