Point taken
Three games into the new season and the ICTP football team finally
picked up its first point.
The two previous games ended in disappointing defeats: 6-1 in the first
game against … and 7-3 in the second against … What’s more, the team
seemed to be relying on the goalscoring prowess of one player. Gabriele
Pesco (Maintenance) had fired home all four of ICTP’s goals before last
Tuesday’s game against LN CIB.
The game against LN CIB started brightly, with CIB maintaining more
possession of the ball, but the ICTP defence holding up well. Indeed,
it was almost first blood to ICTP when Fred Kucharski (Weather and
Climate Group) hit the CIB crossbar after a good run into the penalty
area. Honours were even a few minutes later, though, when CIB rattled
the ICTP crossbar.
Mid-way through the first half it was ICTP that broke the deadlock –
and it was that man Pesco again, firing home his fifth of the season.
1-0 at half time.
In what was turning out to be a finely balanced contest, the second
goal was a long time coming. But when it did – through a wicked
deflection – it was ICTP that doubled its lead.
Going two goals down, however, had a galvanising effect on CIB, who
equalised with two goals in quick succession. Then disaster happened. A
mix-up in the ICTP defence allowed CIB to take the lead with a tap-in
with just a few minutes left.
After that, it was all action play from both teams: ICTP to get back
into the match and CIB to finish the game off. Fortunately it was ICTP
that got the required goal – and what a goal!
Mopping up in defence, Peter McGrath (TWAS) spotted JinHo Yoo (Weather
and Climate Group) well up the field. A long pass drifted towards Yoo
in the wind, who rose like an angel and, with a flick of the neck, sent
the ball looping over the CIB ‘keeper to nestle in the back of the net.
Final score: 3-3.
