Post title: Research Scientist - two positions

Purpose of post:
To assist the Head of the Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics
Section in the planning and implementation of the scientific
programmes.
Main responsibilities:
The incumbent will be required to perform the following duties:
(a) Research: To undertake front-line research in the areas of
Statistical Physics and related interdisciplinary areas, including
quantum phase transitions, disordered and glassy systems, soft matter,
non-equilibrium statistical physics, theory of complex systems and
biophysics.
(b) Programme coordination and training: To coordinate and be
responsible for activities in the candidate’s area of expertise, as
well as general training programmes for younger scientists. These
duties involve the organization of schools, workshops, conferences and
topical meetings and the selection of participants, in the area of
Statistical Physics.
(c) Administrative responsibilities: (i) To review applications for
postdoctoral positions and associateships, diploma courses, and
short-term and long-term visits; (ii) to organize weekly seminars and
journal clubs; (iii) to assist the coordinator of the corresponding
sector in running the visiting and training programme in the area of
Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics.
(d) Teaching and mentoring: (i) To lecture in the Condensed Matter
Diploma programme; (ii) to participate in the committee meetings of the
Section and implement the decisions approved by the Head of the
Section; (iii) to review the applications for short term visits and
make recommendations, whenever required by the Head of the Section.
Profile:
• Ph.D or equivalent doctoral level in Physics.
• At least 5 years of research experience of which 2 at international
level.
• Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
• A positive attitude towards the international and multicultural
characteristics of the assignment.
Conditions of employment:
ICTP is a world-class institution focused on research in basic sciences
with responsibility for the promotion, dissemination and support of
science, especially in developing countries. It operates under the
aegis of UNESCO and IAEA. This is an extra-budgetary position of a
continuing nature but the duration of the appointment will be subject
to the availability of funds. UNESCO's salaries are calculated in US
Dollars. They consist of a net base salary and a post adjustment which
reflects the cost of living changes in a particular duty station and
exchange rates. The annual net base salary will start at USD 51,395 if
there are no dependants and at USD 55,060 if there are dependants. The
additional variable post adjustment is currently at USD 2,955 (single
rates) and USD 3,166 (dependency rates) monthly. Both the net base
salary and the post adjustment are exempt from income tax. There is an
attractive benefits package which includes 30 days of annual vacation,
home travel, education grant for dependent children, pension plan and
medical insurance. The Director retains full discretion to appoint the
candidate at a lower grade of the post.
