Purpose of post: To undertake world-class research in the Physics at 
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Future High Energy Accelerators, 
and to establish collaboration between the High Energy Section of ICTP 
and CERN as well as major accelerator centers around the world
Main responsibilities: The incumbent will be required to perform the 
following duties:

(a) Research: To undertake competitive and independent research, and 
create and lead a research group composed of post-doctoral fellows and 
visitors

(b) Program coordination and training: To coordinate and be responsible 
for activities in the candidate’s area of expertise, as well as general 
training programmes for younger scientists. These duties involve the 
organization and supervision of schools, workshops, conferences and 
topical meetings.

(c) Administrative responsibilities: (i) To review applications for 
postdoctoral positions and associateships, diploma courses, and 
short-term and long-term visits; (ii) to assume financial 
responsibilities that may be delegated by the Head of the Section; 
(iii) to organize lectures and research visits within the Section

(d) Teaching and mentoring: (i) Teaching as required in Diploma Course 
Programs in High Energy Section and Basic Physics; (ii) mentoring, as 
appropriate, Ph.D. students in the Sandwich Programme in coordination 
with joint supervisors from developing countries; (iii) collaborating, 
as appropriate, with the Associates as well as other visitors from 
developing countries

Profile: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral level in physics, with speciality 
in High Energy Physics
At least 8 years of research experience at a competitive international 
level after completion of Ph.D. The candidate must have an established 
record of accomplishment in a broad area of research.
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
A positive attitude towards the international and multicultural 
characteristics of the assignment

Conditions of employment: ICTP is a world-class institution focused on 
research in basic sciences with responsibility for the promotion, 
dissemination and support of science, especially in developing 
countries. It operates under the aegis of UNESCO and IAEA. This is an 
extra-budgetary position of a continuing nature but the duration of the 
appointment will be subject to the availability of funds. UNESCO's 
salaries are calculated in US Dollars. They consist of a basic salary 
and a post adjustment which reflects the cost of living changes in a 
particular duty station and exchange rates. For this post, the annual 
remuneration starts at about $98,069 if there are no dependants and 
$105,312 if there are dependants, and is exempt from income tax. There 
is an attractive benefits package which includes 30 days of annual 
vacation, home travel, education grant for dependent children, pension 
plan and medical insurance. The Director retains full discretion to 
appoint the candidate at a lower level of the post.
