ICTP vs EURAND, Tuesday 7 February

If you'd have put money on it, you may well be rich by now. It was
certainly a long-shot.
The nationality of the first person to score a goal for ICTP this
season? Papua New Guinean! Well done Manu Rawali.
Not only that, but the debutant Rawali also opened the scoring in the
game against EURAND and, in doing so, scored ICTP's only goal against
EURAND in the last two seasons.
The game turned out to be a tight affair, with EURAND creating the
better chances but ICTP, with Rawali's fine running off the ball,
causing enough problems to keep the EURAND defence on their toes.
Still, it was no surprise when EURAND equalized.
Half-time score: 1-1.
A half-time substitution saw a representative of another nation, South
Korean JinHo (Weather and Climate Group), make his debut for the team.
Now, however, EURAND were starting to put more pressure on the ICTP
goal. One shot hit both posts before rebounding to safety and others
were saved by goalkeeper Nino Coppola (TWAS), who was in fine form.
Eventually a blazing shot from outside the area whizzed past him and
into the net.
Still, EURAND were not making the most of their chances whereas ICTP,
for once, had a little luck in front of goal. Juergen Kroger rose
highest to a dangerous cross to deflect home an equalizer for ICTP
before EURAND went ahead again. This time it was JinHo who capitalized
on some indecision in the EURAND defence, forcing home a loose ball
from 5 metres out to make the score 3-3.
Despite still being level against the run of play, the match was
entering its final phase still well balanced. EURAND scored another
excellent goal with a long-range drive – only for Gabriele Pesco
(Maintenance) to catch the opposition keeper off-guard from the
resulting kick-off and score from the half-way line. 4-4.
But now fitness was beginning to tell. Riwali was fading after all his
hard work up front and the resulting substitutions – including another
debut, this time for Iwa Wittwer from Germany – although aimed at
getting fresh legs onto the field only succeeded in disrupting ICTP's
pattern of play. In the final few minutes, EURAND scored three times
more and sealed their victory: 7-4.
