Dear colleagues,
The Pak-ICTP Alumni Society invites you to an online activity it is holding for the International Day of Light (IDL) 2021, on 5th of March at 2PM Rome time.
A popular talk will be given by Unicorn Black founder and international pop star Aaron Haroon Rashid, who has directed Pakistan’s first 3D animation series BURKA AVENGER. He created the series as a way to emphasise the importance of girls’ education in Pakistan and abroad, as well as issues such as equality and discrimination.
The protagonist of the show is Jiya, a school teacher at a local girls school. Burka Avenger wears the burka as a costume to disguise her identity similar to other super heroes. The all-encompassing veil has typically been viewed as symbol of female repression in the West but the cartoon presents it in a different light, as a symbol of female empowerment. Her use of books and pens as weapons is symbolic on many levels. The Burka Avenger fights for Justice, Peace and Education for all. It has been launched to great success in Pakistan in July 2013 then made its international airing in Afghanistan, India and Indonesia and dubbed in many languages including Turkish, Arabic, Tamil, Pashto, and Persian.
