Joint
Security Advisory by the Security Teams of the Rome Based
Agencies - Strengthened security measures in Italy
In
response to the Nice attack, European countries have tightened
border controls with France. Moreover, due to recent threats
of terrorism in major European cities, particularly Rome,
Italian authorities have strengthened security measures and
increased the number of Operational Units for Rapid
Intervention to monitor sensitive targets. The alert in Italy
remains at level two (the highest level of emergency is level
one for attacks in progress) and it allows for immediate
action of specialized military forces.
While
the UN organizations based in Rome are not a primary sensitive
target, UN personnel and their families are advised to:
· be
extremely vigilant when in public places or using public
transport
· be
prepared for additional security screening
· monitor
media and factor updated information into official and
personal travel plans and activities
· check
local sources to stay informed about local events to avoid
crowded places
· follow
UN travel and safety procedures
· contact
respective FAO/WFP/IFAD Security Services to report any
specific safety concerns
· observe
your surroundings and report any suspicious item or behaviour
to the police (emergency number, 112).
The
RBA security teams are working closely with Italian
Authorities to monitor the situation and to keep staff
informed and updated accordingly.
