To the ICTP Community:
Please be informed that on the occasion of the 5th Meeting of the UN
Secretary-General's Scientific Advisory Board (UNSAB) this week on
the ICTP premises, the Parco di Miramare (Ministero dei Beni
e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo - Direzione Generale Musei
- Polo Museale del Friuli Venezia Giulia) has generously agreed to
re-open the Dirac Stairs on Wednesday 25 May 2016 from 9.00 -
16.00 hrs on an exceptional basis in order to underline the
importance and spirit of cooperation between ICTP and the Park
authorities.
You may recall the anecdote in the book 'Reminiscences about a great physicist : Paul
Adrien Maurice Dirac'
"In Trieste at the International Centre for
Theoretical Physics, ....., there is a set of stairs along a
steep slope, "the Scala Dirac" or Dirac Stairs, from the Centre
to the park. These stairs were built because Dirac was seen
attempting to climb down that steep slope and unable to do so
had slid down. To prevent an unfortunate accident, these stairs
were then built and named after him".
We hope as many of you will take advantage of the stairs being open
to take a stroll into the park on this special occasion tomorrow.
Thank you.
