Trieste will host the European Carnival (Euro Carneval) next week - from 13 - 16 February - with about 800 persons all clad in carnival costumes. There will be alot of action, music, shows and fun downtown and at Muggia.

Art exhibit "Altro da Qui" by Patrizia Delbello at the City's Art Gallery in Piazza Unita' 4.  Open every day until 19/2/14 : 10-13/17-20.

 

Photography exhibit "Magrit Dittmann-Soldicic: Following the footsteps of violinist Velemir Dugina" at Palazzo Costanzi (behind Piazza Unita') with photos of the violinist (1958 - 1987) by the German photographer with many shots pertaining to the seventies and eighties that tell the story of this talented young musician who passed away when he was only 28. Open every day, 8- 20.

 

Photography exhibit "Elemento Istria" by photographers  Sara Kaleb and Lorenzo Lucia with shots on Istria's beauty and nature. At the Unione Istriani in via S. Pellico, 2 downtown. On until 20 /1/2014, open Mon. -Fri. from 10:00 - 12:00 / 16.30 - 18.30. A new book on this topic with photos will be presented on the last day of the show.


Sat. 8/2: Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of historical Caffe' San Marco

The historical Caffe' San Marco inaugurated in 1914 will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary tomorrow. It is the place where intellectuals, writers, journalists, photographers, etc., used to hang out in the past. Just to mention some famous names like: Svevo, Sabam Voghera, Magris. It was also used  as a location for a couple of films a few years ago. It is well worth a visit as it is decorated with original art deco works. It is downtown,  in Via Battisti, 18(road parallel to Viale XX settembre).


"Aspettando il Carnevale" show  with 250 dancers at the Rossetti Theatre on Sunday at 19:00

On Sunday at 19.00 at Teatro Rossetti in Viale XX settembre, there will be a show on Arlecchino's real story with a massive performance by 250 dancers celebrating the upcoming Carnival festival. There will be fantastic scenography done by ArteffettoDanza and classic music by Auber, Shostakovich and songs recalling hits by the Trentmollers, Copacabana, Brian Eno and Beyonce'. Tickets on sale at the theatre until Sat. 8/2 from 8.30-12.30/ 16-19.30 .

 

TOURING THIS AREA

 

City Sight-Seeing tour by bus (like the red London buses), lasts for one hour, departing from downtown at the Stazione Marittima (close to Piazza Unita') but you can board the bus at GRIGNANO. Tickets last for 48 hours and there are 3 tours in the mornings (from 10.00 -12.00) and 3 in the afternoons (from 14.00 -16.00), Ticket costs: Euro 18/head; children Euro 9/head. Monte Grisa Sanctuary

The Sanctuary on Mount Grisa, which is easily spotted from the Barcola Riviera, was designed by engineer Antonio Guacci and consecrated in 1966. It was built to fulfill a vow by Trieste's Archbishop Santin at the end of WW2, for the liberation without fierce battles or destruction of Trieste. Pope John XXIII decided that the Sanctuary would be dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is surrounded by beautiful carsic nature and when the weather is nice, it is very pleasant to have healthy walks around the area. Take bus 42 from the train station or from Piazza Oberdan.

 

KLEINE BERLIN

Is a series of WW2 underground air-raid tunnels in via Fabio Severo downton, used to protect from the air raids and attacks of the enemies. The underground system conected the mansion of the SS and polic officer Odilo Globocnik who was sent here by the SS chief Himmler to crush the Partisan Resistance movemebnt. The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated in the Karst half an hour from the city centre. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust. Visiting times every hour: 10:00 - 18:00. Each visit lasts one hour. Entrance ticket:  Euro 11/each. For groups of over 15 persons: Euro 5/head. Take bus 42 from Piazza Oberdan and get off at Borgo Grotta, Sgonico – proceed by foot for 5 minutes – follow road sign for Grotta Gigante. Wear comfortable shoes, no heels. The Revoltella Modern Art Museum is located downtown; it was founded in Trieste in 1872 by Baron Pasquale Revoltella who left his house to the city (located in Piazza Venezia) after he passed away. It still displays all the art works, furniture and books of his time. The main building was built in 1858, designed by Friedrich Hitzig and later on, in 1907 the City acquired the Brunner Building located nearby in order to expand the original collection. This building has been completely utilized only since 1963, following its restructuring of Carlo Scarpa. Its entrance is from Via Diaz 27. It has a remarkable collection of modern art (1860 to 1970), baroque art and 1700s and 1800s furniture, located in a superb environment. Not to be missed! Open from 10:00 - 19:00, closed on Tuesdays.

 

The Civico Museo Sartorio is a Villa that once belonged to the Sartorio dynasty originally from Sanremo. A branch of the family moved in 1775 to Trieste as part of its business expansion. Pietro Sartorio here with his family and bought the house, previously owned by the merchant family Faraon, originary from Alexandria of Egypt. The last heir of the Sartorio family, Baroness Anna Segrè Sartorio, left the villa and all its furniture to Trieste's city council with the explicit wish to make it a public museum.

The villa was used by the Allies, as their headquarter after WW2, as can be seen by the marks on the tiles and walls where the telephone and electric leads were brought through. Besides the villa itself being a very interesting building architecturally, it contains drawings of famous XVII century artists Giambattista Tiepolo.

 

 

Visit the Museum of the Sea  in Viale Campo Marzio, 5 at the far end of the seafront downtown. It tells the history of shipyards, navigation and fishing in the Adriatic Sea, displaying models of ships, dioramas and old navigation tools. Special sections are dedicated to Giuuseppe Ressel and experiments by Guglielmo Marconi.  Open each day from Thursday to Tuesday, except on from 9.00 - 13.00.  For more info see: www.museodelmaretrieste.it.

 

 

Risiera di San Sabba is a former rice-husking facility that was built in 1913. After September 8, 1943, the Nazi occupation forces used the premises as prison camp, headquarters where deported prisoners were sorted out to be sent to Germany and Poland, raided goods depot, prison and extermination camp for hostages, partisans, political and Jewish prisoners. On April 4, 1944 a crematory plant was installed and made operative. In 1965, a decree issued by the President of the Republic raised the “Risiera di San Sabba” to the status of National Monument.
