Art exhibit at the Revoltella Museum by Jagoda BUIC - not to be missed - an international painter, film producer, costume artist with works on display at New York's Metropolitan museum. She will be in Trieste on 17/1/14. Revoltella museum is in via Diaz nr 27, close to Piazza Venezia. Open until 19/1/2014, each day except Tuesdays, from 10-19. Ticket: euro 7/head.
Photography exhibit "Elemento Istria" by photographers Sara Kaleb and Lorenzo Lucia with shots on Istria's beauty and nature. At the Unione Istriani in via S. Pellico, 2 downtown. Fantastic performance by Cirque Eloize at the Rossetti Theatre until 19/1
The show called "D" is hard to describe, but easy to
like and will take place from 15/1 to 19/1 at the Rossetti

Trieste Film Festival 2014 at the Tripcovich & Miela Theatres - until 22/1/2014
This festival celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first world war with its first movie at 10.45 "La Grande guerra" (The great war, by Mario Monicelli with actors Gassman and Sordi. The movie will be followed by "Cinema Brunch" a real novelty of foods at the bar at 13.00 (booking required). At 15:00 at Teatro Miela (close by) screening of the documentary "I sentieri della gloria, in viaggio con Monicelli sui luoghi della Grande guerra" made in 1959. At Teatro Tripcovich look at the photo exhibit related to WW1. A photo exhibit will be displayed at the Tripcovich theatre with 15 photos takenin 1959 on the set of the film "The Great war"

The Collection of Scaramanga' di Altomonte (Collezione Scaramanga' di Altomonte) in via F. Filzi 1, downtown is a prestigious foundation that exhibits, on a rotation basis, documents, furniture, ceramics and works of art. It is in an apartment which is part of an 1800s building where Baron Giuseppe Scaramanga' used to live you. On display the first printed books dating from 1455 onwards and a rich collection of antique playing cards and prints. The rooms are still furnished in the 1800s style. Open only on Tuesdays and Fridays, call to book. Entrance free. Ring 040631585.
The Civico Museo Sartorio is a Villa that once belonged to the Sartorio dynasty originally from Sanremo. A branch of the family moved in 1775 to Trieste as part of its business expansion. Pietro Sartorio here with his family and bought the house, previously owned by the merchant family Faraon, originary from Alexandria of Egypt. The last heir of the Sartorio family, Baroness Anna Segrè Sartorio, left the villa and all its furniture to Trieste's city council with the explicit wish to make it a public museum.
The villa was used by the Allies, as their headquarter after WW2, as can be seen by the marks on the tiles and walls where the telephone and electric leads were brought through. Besides the villa itself being a very interesting building architecturally, it contains drawings of famous XVII century artists Giambattista Tiepolo.
The Revoltella Modern Art Museum is located downtown; it was founded in Trieste in 1872 by Baron Pasquale Revoltella who left his house to the city (located in Piazza Venezia) after he passed away. It still displays all the art works, furniture and books of his time. The main building was built in 1858, designed by Friedrich Hitzig and later on, in 1907 the City acquired the Brunner Building located nearby in order to expand the original collection. This building has been completely utilized only since 1963, following its restructuring of Carlo Scarpa. Its entrance is from Via Diaz 27. It has a remarkable collection of modern art (1860 to 1970), baroque art and 1700s and 1800s furniture, located in a superb environment. Not to be missed! Open from 10:00 - 19:00, closed on Tuesdays. Visit the Museum of the Sea in Viale Campo Marzio, 5 at the far end of the seafront downtown. It tells the history of shipyards, navigation and fishing in the Adriatic Sea, displaying models of ships, dioramas and old navigation tools. Special sections are dedicated to Giuuseppe Ressel and experiments by Guglielmo Marconi. Open each day from Thursday to Tuesday, except on from 9.00 - 13.00. Risiera di San Sabba is a former rice-husking facility that was built in 1913. After September 8, 1943, the Nazi occupation forces used the premises as prison camp, headquarters where deported prisoners were sorted out to be sent to Germany and Poland, raided goods depot, prison and extermination camp for hostages, partisans, political and Jewish prisoners. On April 4, 1944 a crematory plant was installed and made operative. In 1965, a decree issued by the President of the Republic raised the “Risiera di San Sabba” to the status of National Monument. The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated in the Karst half an hour from the city centre. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust. Visiting times every hour: 10:00 - 18:00. Each visit lasts one hour. Entrance ticket: Euro 11/each. For groups of over 15 persons: Euro 5/head. Take bus 42 from Piazza Oberdan and get off at Borgo Grotta, Sgonico – proceed by foot for 5 minutes – follow road sign for Grotta Gigante. Wear comfortable shoes, no heels.
