LECTURES AT PALAZZO GOPCEVICH, TRIESTE

Tonight, 7 November at 18.30 at Palazzo Gopcevich downtown, along the Canale di Ponterosso: ICTP organizes a talk in Italian on medical physics and its benefits with the participation of Professors Bertocchi, Longo and de Denaro. There will be music intermissions by Conservatorio Giuseppe Tartini and wine and food tasting offered by local producers. Everybody is welcome to attend. Art Exhibitions

 

LAST period to see the VENICE Biennial International Art Exhibition (closing this year on 24 Nov) at the Giardini and Arsenale and other areas in Venice. Photography exhibit at STUDIO TOMMASEO ( via del Monte 2/1, close to Corso Italia) by outstanding eclectic Polish artist, writer, photographer, philosopher, poet Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885-1939) with portraits of Arthur Rubenstein and the great Polish anthropologist Bonislaw Malinowski. At the MIB SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT of TRIESTE in Largo Caduti di Nassiriya, 1, Ferdinandeo), solo show "La buona novella" (Good news) by artist Patrizia Bigarella. The artist presents paintings, sculptures and engravings of extraordinary quality. Open until 12 November. Art show VII Salone d'Autunno dell'Arte Triestina (the Autumn Salon of Triestine Art) at LUX Art Gallery in via Rittmeyer 7 with many contemporary Triestine artists. Open until 16/11, on Mon-Tues-Thurs-Fri-Sat,  from 17.00-20.00.

 

PROSECCO'S traditional San Martino feast

 

From tomorrow, Prosecco (in the karst) will be celebrating its traditional local feast dedicated to San Martino with wine and food tastings until Monday. The programme features traditional music, horse carts and carriages, plays, transportation of wine and on Monday, the fair of San Martino will display its stalls selling wines, food, chestnuts and traditional sausages with sauerkraut.

 

Beethoven at the Church of San Silvestro

 

Tonite at 21.00 the Church of San Silvestro (behind Piazza Unita') pianist Naruhiko Kawaguchi will perform the airs of Beethoven, Clementi and Dussek. Ticket: Euro 7/head.

 

Renaissance and Baroque music a Sucuola della Musica 55 downtown

 

Tomorrow at 20.30 at the Casa della Musica 55 in Via Capitelli 3 (close to Piazza Unita') performance by the PALLADIO DUO with music by Martin y Coll, Frescobaldi, Valente, Boddecker, Corrette, Cimoso, Handel and Salaverde. Ticket: Euro 10/head.

TOURING THIS AREA

 

City Sight-Seeing tour by bus (like the red London buses), lasts for one hour, departing from downtown at the Stazione Marittima (close to Piazza Unita') but you can board the bus at GRIGNANO. Tickets last for 48 hours and there are 3 tours in the mornings (from 10.00 -12.00) and 3 in the afternoons (from 14.00 -16.00), Ticket costs: Euro 18/head; children Euro 9/head. Guided tour of Trieste every day at 10.30 a.m.: A 2 hours guided walking tour through the main sites and monuments of Trieste. The tour is in Italian and English and costs euro 7/pers. The Revoltella Modern Art Museum is located downtown; it was founded in Trieste in 1872 by Baron Pasquale Revoltella who left his house to the city (located in Piazza Venezia) after he passed away. It still displays all the art works, furniture and books of his time. The main building was built in 1858, designed by Friedrich Hitzig and later on, in 1907 the City acquired the Brunner Building located nearby in order to expand the original collection. This building has been completely utilized only since 1963, following its restructuring of Carlo Scarpa. Its entrance is from Via Diaz 27. It has a remarkable collection of modern art (1860 to 1970), baroque art and 1700s and 1800s furniture, located in a superb environment. Not to be missed! Open from 10:00 - 19:00, closed on Tuesdays. VAL ROSANDRA: Nature lovers will enjoy its beauty

The Val Rosandra Valley encloses a remarkable natural environment which reveals its true beauty in autumn. It is situated half an hour by bus from the city centre. There are several hiking routes from easy to not-so-easy, an old railway station that once connected Trieste to Vienna in the past centuries, now converted into a cycling path. There is a stream, a Roman aqueduct, a restaurant and rock climbers enoy training there.

Take bus 40 from the train station (it goes to Dolina) and get off in strada della Rosandra.

 

Risiera di San Sabba is a former rice-husking facility that was built in 1913. After September 8, 1943, the Nazi occupation forces used the premises as prison camp, headquarters where deported prisoners were sorted out to be sent to Germany and Poland, raided goods depot, prison and extermination camp for hostages, partisans, political and Jewish prisoners. On April 4, 1944 a crematory plant was installed and made operative. In 1965, a decree issued by the President of the Republic raised the “Risiera di San Sabba” to the status of National Monument. Visit the Oriental Art Museum in Palazzetto Leo in via San Sebastiano, 1 (near Piazza Unita') there are many oriental items, paintings, furniture, porcelains that have been collected by our seafaring ancestors here in Trieste.  It is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 9.00 - 13.00.  For more info see: www.muuseoarteorientaletrieste.it. The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated in the Karst half an hour from the city centre. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust. Visiting times every hour: 10:00 - 18:00. Each visit lasts one hour. Entrance ticket:  Euro 11/each. For groups of over 15 persons: Euro 5/head. Take bus 42 from Piazza Oberdan and get off at Borgo Grotta, Sgonico – proceed by foot for 5 minutes – follow road sign for Grotta Gigante. Wear comfortable shoes, no heels. CAFES, FOOD AND WINE IN TRIESTE

Trieste's historical cafes:  Caffe' degli Specchi (Piazza Unita'), Caffe' Tommaseo (Riva 3 Novembre) and San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) opened in the 19th & 20th century, are places where writers, musicians and artists meet and where artistic-cultural events are often held.

The most typical & genuine Triestine Buffet in town is "Da Pepi", in via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3, where one can have excellent ham rolls at the counter or enjoy the special house dish: a variety of ham and meats served with sauerkraut and freshly grated horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Reviewed by the New York Times as the best in the Region.

Two traditional pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty " style are "La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre (near Piazza San Antonio) with its delicious pastries and coffee served in a cosy environment and "Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in Italy.

 

OSMIZE

An "osmiza" is a private farm house in the karst hills. There are several open this period. The origins of the osmiza dates back to the Austrian times when the Austrian Emperor Joseph II gave permission to all his citizens to sell directly their wine and some of their own goods (cheese, eggs, bread, ham) for a period of eight days. The word comes from the Slovenian language, "osem" (eight). They can be spotted from the road as they are indicated with a branch of leaves on the roadsigns, called frasche.
