At ICTP ON SATURDAY, 19 OCTOBER AT 20:00: OPENING CEREMONY OF THE LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL, MAIN LECTURE HALL, LEONARDO BUILDING
The XXVIII Festival of Latin American Cinema will be inaugurated at the ICTP on Saturday, 19 October at 20:00. After welcome speeches by the organizers, there will be a brief award ceremony followed by the film "La ùltima batalla de Salvador Allende" (Canada/France/Chile, 1998) by Patricio Henrìquez (in Spanish with Italian subtitles). A small reception for all participants in the event will be served in the foyer at the end of the film at around 21:30. Art Exhibitions
On Fri 18/10 starting at 16.00 at STUDIO TOMMASEO downtown in via del Monte 2/1 (it is close to Corso Italia) talks on outstanding eclectic Polish artist, writer, photographer, philosopher, poet Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885-1939) by: Paweł Polit (Witkacy’s drawings and paintings: towards ontological iconography), Milada Ślizińska (Tadeusz Kantor performing Witkiewicz, from "The Cuttlefish" to "Umarła Klasa"), Przemysław Strożek (Italian Futurists, Witkacy and the origins of photo-performance), Giovanna Tomassucci (Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz: a Polish writer for today?) and Elena de Varda (Witkewicz and Ingarden. A philosophycal friendship).

LAST MONTH TO SEE THE VENICE Biennial International Art Exhibition (closing this year on 24 Nov) at the Giardini and Arsenale and other areas in Venice. At the MIB SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT of TRIESTE in Largo Caduti di Nassiriya, 1, Ferdinandeo), solo show "La buona novella" (Good news) by artist Patrizia Bigarella. Chez Café' degli Specchi : Operetta
On Sat. 19/10 at 18.00 at Café' degli Specchi (Piazza Unita'), sip your tea or aperitif while enjoying an unusual and entertaining "food-based" operetta concert by soprano Ilaria Zanetti and pianist Master Trojan. Music by Offenbach, Strauss, Fratelli Costa, and various other authors.
Jazz at Teatro Miela on 17 & 19 & 20 October by Norwegian & Italian musicians
Thurs 17 October at Teatro Miela at 21.00 popular Norwegian musicians Erving Aarset and Jan Bang will play electric jazz.
On Sat 19 Oct at 21.00, an Italian group called Tommaso Cappellato & Astral Travel will play a fusion of Afro-jazz, Latin and funk music.
On Sun 20 Oct at 21.00, one of the most creative European jazz pianists, Swedish Bobo Stenson will play solo his tunes.

TOURING THIS AREA
City Sight-Seeing tour by bus (like the red London buses), lasts for one hour, departing from downtown at the Stazione Marittima (close to Piazza Unita') but you can board the bus at GRIGNANO. Tickets last for 48 hours and there are 3 tours in the mornings (from 10.00 -12.00) and 3 in the afternoons (from 14.00 -16.00), Ticket costs: Euro 18/head; children Euro 9/head. Dreher Beer Museum
The only one in Italy in via Torrebianca 41, Trieste. It displays objects, documents, posters, ads that belong to the historical tradition of this old beer factory. Open only on Wednesdays, from 16.30 - 19.00. For more info see www.birrofilatriestina.it
The Civico Museo SARTORIO is a villa that once belonged to the Sartorio dynasty originally from Sanremo. A branch of the family moved in 1775 to Trieste as part of its business expansion. Pietro Sartorio here with his family and bought the house, previously owned by the merchant family Faraon, originary from Alexandria of Egypt. The last heir of the Sartorio family, Baroness Anna Segrè Sartorio, left the villa and all its furniture to Trieste's city council with the explicit wish to make it a public museum.
The villa was used by the Allies, as their headquarter after WW2, as can be seen by the marks on the tiles and walls where the telephone and electric leads were brought through. Besides the villa itself being a very interesting building architecturally, it contains drawings of famous XVII century artists Giambattista Tiepolo. Open Tue-Sun from 10.00 - 18.00. The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated in the Karst half an hour from the city centre. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust. Visiting times every hour: 10:00 - 18:00. Each visit lasts one hour. Entrance ticket: Euro 11/each. For groups of over 15 persons: Euro 5/head. Take bus 42 from Piazza Oberdan and get off at Borgo Grotta, Sgonico – proceed by foot for 5 minutes – follow road sign for Grotta Gigante. Wear comfortable shoes, no heels. CAFES, FOOD AND WINE IN TRIESTE
Trieste's historical cafes: Caffe' degli Specchi (Piazza Unita'), Caffe' Tommaseo (Riva 3 Novembre) and San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) opened in the 19th & 20th century, are places where writers, musicians and artists meet and where artistic-cultural events are often held.
The most typical & genuine Triestine Buffet in town is "Da Pepi", in via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3, where one can have excellent ham rolls at the counter or enjoy the special house dish: a variety of ham and meats served with sauerkraut and freshly grated horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Reviewed by the New York Times as the best in the Region.
Two traditional pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty " style are "La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre (near Piazza San Antonio) with its delicious pastries and coffee served in a cosy environment and "Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in Italy.
OSMIZE
An "osmiza" is a private farm house in the karst hills. There are several open this period. The origins of the osmiza dates back to the Austrian times when the Austrian Emperor Joseph II gave permission to all his citizens to sell directly their wine and some of their own goods (cheese, eggs, bread, ham) for a period of eight days. The word comes from the Slovenian language, "osem" (eight). They can be spotted from the road as they are indicated with a branch of leaves on the roadsigns, called frasche.
