SPECIAL EVENTS

On Thursday, 11 April: Science Caffe' at 18:00 presents a talk by Prof. Claudio Tuniz at Caffe' Tommaseo in Riva 3 novembre, nr. 5 (close to Piazza Unita') on the occasion of the publication of the book "Science of our origins". He will present, together with Nicola Bressi and Federico Bernardini,  the following topic:  "Istrian dentists during the stone ages. On Thursday 11 April at 18.00 at the LOVAT bookstore downtown in Viale XX settembre 20 (located on the 3rd floor of  the Oviesse dept. store)  spend an hour with famous astrophysicist Margherita Hack and Rossella Palomba, author of the book "Guida pratica per ragazze in gamba - come fare ricerca e vivere felici " (A practical guide for Smart girls - How to be a researcher and live happily).

On Saturday 13 April & Sunday 14 April at the Stazione Marittima (5 minutes walk after Piazza Unita') take part in a major ecological event : North Eastern Sea, Adriatico Meeting Point (Mare Nordest 2013, Adriatico punto d'incontro), with interesting visits to several locations, talks, films, photography displays, info & tourism counters, diving tips, etc. on the preservation of our environment. Organized by the Trieste Sommersa Diving assn. On Saturday at 11.00,  a group of scuba divers will clean up the junk dumped in the Ponterosso Canal with the aim of raising awareness amongst citizens re the need to respect and protect our environment.  Check the program:  www.marenordest.it Take bus nr. 8 from Roiano or the central railway station and ask to get off at the stazione marittima.

On Saturday 13 April at the Adriatico Guesthouse at 20.30, in the Kastler Hall, view the documentary "Mission Trieste to Morocco 2013", a video on a Humanitarian mission carried out by the members of the Nordest4 x 4 Road Trieste Club. It will last one hour.  Everybody is most welcome to join.

 

EVENT at the MIELA THEATRE

From Thursday 11 April to Saturday 13 April: the 'Trieste RIparte Festival' features three days of artistic events  at Teatro Miela (close to the railway station downtown, from 17.00 - 24.30. The programme has a great variety of shows, music, theatre, photography exhibits, and several popular writers, actors and musicians will be present. Daily ticket: Euro 13/head.

 

TRIESTE WOMEN RUN

Sunday, 14 April: Women athletes can register themselves for the run - 8 km. or 4 km. - at   www.bavisela.it/2013/interna_women.php

Otherwise, Sign up directly on Sunday at the Montedoro Freetime Shopping centre in Muggia, second fl., from  9.00- 10.15.  Departure for the run is scheduled at 10.30 and prizes will be awarded at 12.00. On your marks, get set, gooooo!

 

 TOUR TRIESTE

The Miramare Castle is right next to the ICTP and is open every day - except on Monday mornings - from 9.00 to 18.30. Entrance to the surrounding park is free (8.00 - 19.00). The location, gardens, castle with the lovely decor and furnishings, paintings,rooms full of history are not to be missed. Ticket: Euro 4/head. For more info: www.castello-miramare.it

The Natural Reserve of Miramare, WWF, is located in a building inside the park of  Miramare and is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 - 13:00 and 14:00 - 16:00. Entrance costs Euro 2,50/head. www.riservamarinamiramare.it/

 

The Science Centre Laboratorio dell'Immaginario at the Adriatico Guesthouse, (Grignano), is an interactive and multimedial museum. It has interesting experiments and videos and more. It hosts exhibitions, events and activities with the aim of spreading scientific and technological culture. There are special programs for children each month. Open January to May and October to December only on Sundays from 120.00 - 20.00. The Duino Castle is one of the most attractive castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso royal family. From its cliff top location there is a stunning view of the sea as it overlooks a small fishing village and is surrounded by colourful, extensive gardens. Inside, you can admire the furnishings, paintings, books and mementoes collected over centuries; visit its beautiful park and the World War 2 bunker. Open every day from 9:30 - 16:30. The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated in the Triestine Karst (Carso), half an hour from the city center. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust. Visiting times every hour: 10:00 - 18:00. Each visit lasts one hour. Entrance ticket:  Euro 11/each. For groups of over 15 persons: Euro 5/head. Take bus 42 from Piazza Oberdan and get off at Borgo Grotta, Sgonico – proceed by foot for 5 minutes – follow road sign for Grotta Gigante. Wear comfortable shoes, no heels. Some traditional CAFES & BUFFET DOWNTOWN

Trieste's historical cafes:  The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and the San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) are places where writers, intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art exhibits and musical evenings are held there.

Renown Triestine Buffet in town: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3: a typical Triestine old-fashioned food place where one can have excellent ham sandwiches at the bar or enjoy the special house dish, a variety of meats served with sauerkraut and freshly grated horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Reviewed by the New York Times as the best in the Region.

 

 Traditional pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty " style: "La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre (near Piazza San Antonio) withits deiicious pastries and coffee served in a cosy historical environment and "Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in Italy.
