ART EXHIBITIONS

On Sat. 23 February at 18.00 hrs., Inauguration of Solo art show "Sfaccettature" (Many facets) by Lucia Ghirardi at Galleria Rettori Tribbio (downtown, in the old city). The show is open until 8 March 2012, weekdays 10-12:30/17-19:30, Sunday 10 - 12/ Closed on Monday and Friday afternoon).

 

At the Sartorio Museum (Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII, n.1): "Il tiepolo a Trieste - The drawings of G.B.Tiepolo", ongoing until Sunday 07/04/2013. Open Tuesdays to Sundays, 10.00 - 18.00. Closed on Mondays. Ticket euro 5,50

 

At the Municipal Art Gallery (Piazza Unita' 4), solo exhibition by Claudio Saccari "Attimi" ("Moments"), ongoing until 24/02/13, 10.00  13.00 /17.00 - 20.00.

 

MUSEUM

Visit the Sartorio Museum, an ancient 18th century Villa that belonged to a rich merchant family. There are beautiful rooms with antique furniture and important art collections, paintings, jewellery, furnitures, silverware as well as 254 drawings by Tiepolo (1696-1770, a famous Venetian artist), Santa Chiara's triptic and more recently, Fittcke's paintings. Ticket euro 5,50.  The Sartorio is situated in Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII, n.1, open Tuesday - Sunday 9:00 - 13:00. Take bus 30.

At the Rossetti Theatre

- Assicurazioni Generali Hall (Viale XX Settembre 45): "Rain Man" on 21/02 at 20.30. Based on the renowned film directed by Barry Levinson and interpreted in a masterly manner by Tom Cruise & Dustin Hoffman. The drama would like to be an invitation to recognize and respect differences in the others, by treating them the way we would like to be treated. Under the direction of Saverio Marconi, performed by Luca Lazzareschi and Luca Bastianello.

 

- Bartoli Hall (Viale XX Settembre 45): "Il tormento e l'estasi di Steve Jobs" on 21/02 at 20.30. Based on “The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” by Mike Daisey  and performed by Fulvio Falzarano under the direction of Enrico Luttmann. Jobs's wit has changed the world and his utopia has been crucial in the collective imagination. "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish" He also had dark sides, pointed out in the play.Tickets from Euro 19. FILMS - ENGLISH LANGUAGE - PROGRAMME 2012/13

Several great films at the Ariston Cinema (Viale Romolo Gessi 14 - Buses 8, 9 & 15) for members of the British Film Club, Trieste. Membership entitles to borrow books and choose from an enthralling collection of DVDs (including the best of British TV) for free from the British Film Club in Via dei Crociferi,3 (ground floor), beginning Friday 16/11.

TOUR TRIESTE

The Miramare Castle is right next to the ICTP and is open every day from 9.00 to 18.30. Entrance to the surrounding park is free (8.00 - 16.00, until the end of February). The location, gardens, castle with the lovely decor and furnishings, paintings, rooms full of history are not to be missed. For more info: www.castello-miramare.it

The Duino Castle is one of the most attractive castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso royal family. From its cliff top location there is a stunning view of the sea as it overlooks a small fishing village and is surrounded by colourful, extensive gardens. Inside, you can admire the furnishings, paintings, books and mementoes collected over centuries; visit its beautiful park and the World War 2 bunker. The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante
The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated on the Triestine Karst and an exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust.  The temperature is constantly around 11º and the tour lasts around one hour. Open from 10.00 to 16.00. Entrance tickets: Euro 11.00; for groups of over 15 persons Euro 5/head. For more info: www.grottagigante.it

The SLIVIA TOWERS CAVE at Aurisina Cave (Bus nr.44 from Piazza Oberdan) is 60 mt. deep and 600 mt. long and is adorned with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, like towers! (The most famous are a group of 8 stalagmites, after which the cave is named). The cave can be visited by anyone, without particular tools, however sturdy shoes are recommended.  Admission: 8,00 euro for adults and 6 euro for 6-12 years. CAFES, FOOD AND WINE IN TRIESTE

Trieste's historical cafes:  The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and the San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) are places where writers, intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art exhibits and musical evenings are held there.

Renown Triestine Buffet in town: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3: a typical Triestine old-fashioned food place where one can have excellent ham sandwiches at the bar or enjoy the special house dish, a variety of meats served with sauerkraut and freshly grated horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Reviewed by the New York Times as the best in the Region.

 Traditional pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty " style: "La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre (near Piazza San Antonio) withits deiicious pastries and coffee served in a cosy historical environment and "Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in Italy.
