Special Social Evening at ICTP on Tuesday, 11 September: Dinner at 19.30 followed by an entertaining Magic Show in the Cafeteria of the Leonardo Building.

ART EXHIBITIONS

The Hydrodynamic Plant in the Porto Vecchio of Trieste has recently been opened to the public and is a Museum. It is a fascinating 1890 newly restored building that was powered by water and wazs running until 1930. Afterwards, water was replaced by electricity and the plant was active until 1980 and then shut for 30 years. The original machineries are on display. Open each day from 9:30 to 13:00. Ongoing until 12/9. Entrance ticket: Euro 3,00.

 

On Thursday 7/9 at 19:00: Opening of "Ibridamente", solo exhibition by Triestine artist Fabio Fonda with a series of graphic art works at the Civic Art Gallery in Piazza Unita' d'Italia, 4. Ongoing until 26/9, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00.

 

At the Civic Museum Sartorio - Ongoing until 10/9:

"Blooming Salons. Still Life in Municipal Museums". The exhibition includes about 30 works (paintings, drawings and some embroderies) on flowers and fruit. Some of them are part of Sartorio's furnitures, others come from different collections. Special ICTP Price: Euro 3,50. The guided tour starts each day as per following schedule: 10.30, 11.30, 12.00, 13.00, 13.30, 14.30, 15.00, 16.00, 16.30, 17.30.

"Serendipity in a park of books. The dream of an English garden". The exhibition is about the great love and interest for gardens of Baron Giovanni Guglielmo Sartorio, owner of the neoclassic villa which hosts the Museum named after his family. At the Modern Art Gallery "Salone degli Incanti" (once a fishmarket) in Riva Nazario Sauro, an outstanding Photography exhibition by photoreporter Monika Bulaj: "Nur/Luce ­ Appunti afgani" (Afghan notes). MUSIC

The Ragtime Jazz Band at Muggia: on Friday 7/9 in the Auditorium of Porto San Rocco - Muggia. Special guests: Luciano Mosetti (trumpet and Harmonics) and Renato Mattarelli (Piano).

 

TOUR TRIESTE

The Miramare Castle - outstandingly beautiful - is right next to the ICTP and is open every day from 9.00 to 18.30. Entrance to the surrounding park is free (8.00 - 19.00). The Duino Castle is one of the most attractive castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso royal family. From its cliff top location there is a stunning view of the sea as it overlooks a small fishing village and is surrounded by colourful, extensive gardens. Inside, you can admire the furnishings, paintings, books and mementoes collected over centuries, visit its beautiful park and the World War 2 bunker. For more info: www.castellodiduino.it

The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante

The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated on the Triestine Karst and an exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust.  The temperature is constantly around 11º and the tour lasts around one hour. CAFES, FOOD AND WINE IN TRIESTE

Trieste's historical cafes:  The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and the San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) are places where writers, intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art exhibits and musical evenings are held there.

 

Best ice cream in town: Gelateria Zampolli, in via Ghega near the train station or in Viale XX Settembre, where ice creams are made in the traditional way with over 68 flavours.

 

Renown Triestine Buffet in town: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3: a typical Triestine old-fashioned food place where one can have excellent ham sandwiches at the bar or enjoy the special house dish, a variety of meats served with sauerkraut and freshly grated horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Reviewed by the New York Times as the best in the Region.

 

Traditional pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty " style: "La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre. (near Piazza San Antonio) and "Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in Italy.

 

Agriturismo or Farm House Restaurants:

Milic, Localita' Sgonico (Sagrado) in the Carso, offers exellent local wines and typical Carso specialities (mainly soups, grilled meats, home made gnocchi and pasta) tel: 040 327120. Take Bus 46 from Trieste Train Station.

Every Friday evening at 21.00 take part in the event "Sailing through science", at the Civic Sea Museum in Via Campo Marzio 5 where biologists, writers, musicians, sailors, historians, fishermen, students, teachers and documentarists are united by the passion and desire to tell stories about the sea and those who live close to it. On Friday 7/9: "I Poeti del mare" (Poets of the sea) e "Una notte con i pescatori" (One night with the fishermen): a collection of videos that was awarded at the National contest "Vivere il Mare" (Living the sea), edited by the students and the teachers from the School Luigi Galvani in Trieste. Free entrance. Bus  nr. 15 from Piazza Oberdan every 20' until 21.30.

 

Visit The Victory Lighthouse (Faro della Vittoria) in Strada del Friuli. The lighthouse was built by the famous Triestine architect Berlam. It is a commemorative monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of World War I. Great for photos if it's a nice day. Open (April–September):

 NATURE AT ITS BEST:

"La Napoleonica" Panoramic route mostly overlooking the sea, Trieste

Take Bus 4 from Piazza Oberdan to the "Obelisco" and go walking or jogging on the Napoleonica (Napoleon's path). If you wish, you can take path number 12 (marked by C.A.I - Italian Alpine Club) and reach the Sanctuary of Monte Grisa, proceed to Opicina through the Via Crucis path (number 12) and finally return to the Obelisk and take the bus back to the city (approx. 2 hours for the whole tour, 1 hour only for  "Napoleon's path).

 

Hiking in Val Rosandra (half or full day), Trieste

Provided the weather is fine and sunny, the Val Rosandra Valley encloses a remarkable natural environment and a walk through its paths, and by the stream and natural ponds, surrounded by typical carsic vegetation is worth it. Make sure you have good sneakers on and enough water. Walk along colour-marked footpaths, each marked by CAI (Italian Alpine Club), ranging from very easy paths to others that require a certain ability. There are easily accessible caves for speleology and archaeology lovers. You can reach the Valley by taking Bus 40 from the Central Train Station in Trieste and get off in Bagnoli della Rosandra.

 

The Natural Reserve Park of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Dolomite Alps outside Trieste- go by car or by train - organizes interesting guided tours of the Park, please check www.parcodolomitifriulane.it .
