"Colei che sola a me par donna". Women in humanist literature and daily life. "Rembrandt. Incidere la luce (Rembrandt. Engrave light) at the Stables of the Castle of Miramare, Trieste. This building was planned by Carl Junker and built between 1856 and 1860 on the road to the Castle. There are engravings by the great Dutch artist, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606 - 1669), famous painter & engraver and 3 works by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Winckelmann and Art of ancient Egypt (Winckelmann e l'arte presso gli egizi), Civico Museo di Storia ed Arte - Orto Lapidario, Piazza della Cattedrale 1. The collection counts more than 1000 findings, thus being one amongst the best collections in Italy, after those in Torino, Firenze, Bologna and Milano. ENTERTAINMENT

Last few days: "Lights and Sounds. The Imperial dream of Maximilian of Habsburg, from Miramare to Mexico" Now showing in Piazza Venezia (two minutes walk from Piazza Unita') every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evening only until 18/8 at 21.30.  This is a new version of the show that used to attract people for the past decades about the Miramare Castle with illustrations, music and sound effects that tell the sad and unfortunate story of Maximilian of Habsburg, Archduke of Austria and Emperor of Mexico and his wife, Carlotta from Belgium. MUSEUM Revoltella

The Baron and the Archduke. Overseas dreams. Replicas in August: 12/8 at 21.00; 17-18-19/8 at 19.30 & 21.00.

Following the big success of the previous show "A coffee with the Baron", this is a new story with new characters (Maximilian of Austria and Empress Sissi, coming back to Trieste from the Isle of Madera) in a new touring show through the rooms of this wonderful palace.

Visit the exhibit "Trieste-Suez. History and modernity in the Voyage en Egypte  of Pasquale Revoltella". In 1861 the City Council of Trieste resolved to send a delegation to inspect the works of the Suez Canal. Pasquale Revoltella joined the expedition. TOUR TRIESTE

The Friuli Venezia Giulia TOURIST POINT on the corner of Piazza Unità organizes guided walking tours (in Italian and English) every day at 10:30. The Miramare Castle - outstandingly beautiful - is right next to the ICTP and is open every day from 9.00 to 18.30. Entrance to the surrounding park is free (8.00 - 19.00). The Duino Castle is one of the most attractive castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso royal family. From its cliff top location there is a stunning view of the sea as it overlooks a small fishing village and is surrounded by colourful, extensive gardens. The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante

The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated on the Triestine Karst and an exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust.  The temperature is constantly around 11º and the tour lasts around one hour. Boat Excursions

Boat trips Trieste to Muggia or to Sistiana.

Muggia is an old Venetian fishing village (nice cafes and good fish restaurants). The "Delfino Verde" ferry Boats for Muggia depart from Molo Bersaglieri in Trieste (the dock after Piazza Unità). Tickets must be purchased on board. Return ticket euro 6.90 daily, with several schedules. If you wish to go, instead, the other way, i.e., to Sistiana, a swimming resort full of bars, cafes and music on the beach and close to the scenic Rilke path should you choose to have a nice walk in the karst that leads you to the Duino castle, you can in this case, board the boat directly at the bay of Grignano. MISCELLANEOUS

Sunday 19 August, all day long: Antique Market - shops and stalls open - in via delle Beccherie, behind Piazza Unita' and Piazza della Borsa. All kinds of old, modern and antique items and furniture. Remember to bargain a little and to order a good coffee and cake at the nearby  Caffetteria del Borgo.

 

Every Friday evening at 21.00 take part in the event "Sailing through science", at the Civic Sea Museum in Via Campo Marzio 5 where biologists, writers, musicians, sailors, historians, fishermen, students, teachers and documentarists are united by the passion and desire to tell stories about the sea and those who live close to it. On Friday 17/8: "La Foca Monaca dal Mediterraneo all’Adriatico: il ritorno di un sogno?" (The Mediterranean monk seal from the Mediterranean to the Adriatic Sea: the return of a Dream?) Bus  nr. 15 from Piazza Oberdan every 20' until 21.30.

 

Visit The Victory Lighthouse (Faro della Vittoria) in Strada del Friuli. The lighthouse was built by the famous Triestine architect Berlam. It is a commemorative monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of World War I. Great for photos if it's a nice day. Open (April–September): Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sundays & Public Holidays: 16.00 - 19.00; Tuesday and Friday: 9.00 am to 12.00 am and 16.00 - 19.00. Mondays closed. Free entry. ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF TRIESTE

The Carsiana Botanical Garden. Is located within a "dolina" (sinkhole) in Sgonico, 18 km from Trieste. It was created in 1964 to collect, conserve and exhibit the native flora of the Karst in its natural context. The garden is open from May to October with the following schedule: Tuesday -Friday: 9.30 – 13.00; Saturday - Sunday and public holidays: 10.00-13.00, 15.00-19.00. Ticket: Euro 3.00; Reduced:Euro 2.00. Guided visits: Tuesdays - Fridays at 10.00; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 10.30 and 16.00.  You can get there by bus nr. 46 from Piazza Oberdan. FLEA Market every Friday down in Sistiana Bay, in the Caravella Park from 18:00 - 23:00. You can get to Sistiana with the airport bus 51 or take bus 44 from Piazza Oberdan and walk down to the bay here there are several food and drink stalls, music and summer fun.
