ART EXHIBITIONS

At the Miramare Castle's Wind Rose hall: "Si' dolce e il tormento" (So sweet the Torment), an exhibition of three masterpieces by Lucas Cranach the Elder, one of the renown masters of the Reinaissance: "Venus et Cupidon" (one of the five versions of the work painted by the artist between 1530 and 1531, when the enigmatic figure of a nude Venus, adorned with jewels and hat, welcomes and comforts the sorrowful Cupid carrying the honeycomb, symbolic reference to the torment of love), "Le vieillard amoreux" ("The old lover", example of Chanach’s style and caricatured representation of cupboard love) and "Diana e le ninfe sorprese da Atteone"("Diana and the nymphs surprised by Actaeon", which represents the dramatic conclusion of the relationship between the goddess and her lover). At the lovely "Salone degli Incanti" (once a fishmarket) downtown in Riva Nazario Sauro 1: "Nur/Luce - Appunti afgani" (Afghan notes), a remarkable photography exhibition by Monika Bulaj, a renown Polish photographer and reporter. Photos of her numerous stays in Afghanistan, images that are hard to forget. Ongoing until 23/9, from Monday to Friday  17.00-23.00, Saturday Sunday 10.00-23.00. Entrance: euro 6/head.

 

"Tracce" (Tracks), a photography exhibition by Diego Salvador on advertising posters and their evolution over the years; at the Mondadori Library in Via Cavana 14/b. Ongoing until 31/08.

 

"Un tempo pieno di attese" (A Time full of Expectations). A Photography exhibit by Jan Lukas with shots taken in 1965 while he was a political refugee at the Risiera di San Sabba, in Via Palatucci 5, ongoing until 4/11/2012, from 9.00 to 19.00. The Former Nazi lager of Risiera San Sabba during WWII was a foreign refugee camp from 1949 to 1965, hosting almost 1500 persons/day in their quest for freedom who had crossed the Italian border illegally from Ex Jugoslavia, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania. At Studio Tommaseo, downtown in via del Monte 2/1, "DOUBLE TRACK"  (Doppia Traccia): Objects with lost traces from the recent past, an International Design Contest. This biennial contest has become a great challenge proposed to designers from 23 Central Eastern European countries. What kind of new object was the old drawing-curve turned into? The designer of this mysterious object won the Gillo Dorfles Prize! Ongoing until 13/9.   www.triestecontemporanea.it

 

ENTERTAINMENT

From 10 - 15 august: Join in the "BARCOLISSIMA FEAST" at the fountain of Barcola with music, food and fun for everybody. Each evening at 21.00 enjoy the concerts by different bands and stroll along the numerous stands offering all types of items, food, etc.

 

"Lights and Sounds. The Imperial dream of Maximilian of Habsburg, from Miramare to Mexico" Now showing in Piazza Venezia (two minutes walk from Piazza Unita') every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evening only until 18/8.  This is a new version of the show that used to attract people for the past decades about the Miramare Castle with illustrations, music and sound effects that tell the sad and unfortunate story of Maximilian of Habsburg, Archduke of Austria and Emperor of Mexico and his wife, Carlotta from Belgium. Sagra de la Sardela (The Sardine feast) at the sports field in Via delle Campanelle 300, Trieste. Open from Thursdays to Sundays in the evenings with music, entertainment, food and wine events, fried sardines and pizzas. CANTERA SOCIAL CLUB (Sistiana Bay) The most fashionable discotheque of the Adriatic Riviera. MISCELLANEOUS

Every Friday evening at 21.00 take part in the event "Sailing through science", at the Civic Sea Museum in Via Campo Marzio 5 where biologists, writers, musicians, sailors, historians, fishermen, students, teachers and documentarists are united by the passion and desire to tell stories about the sea and those who live close to it. On Friday 10/8: La pesca dei sardoni barcolani.  Bus  nr. 15 from Piazza Oberdan every 20' until 21.30.

 

CLOSE TO TRIESTE

"From utopia to dissent. Russian socialist realism from 1951-1991" Art show with the works of Russian artists of the time at Ugo Carà's Modern Art Museum in Muggia (Via Roma, 9) set up with the assistance of Tatiana Vilibakhova of the Museum of St. Petersburg with paintings and documents. The Carsiana Botanical Garden. Is located within a "dolina" (sinkhole) in Sgonico, 18 km from Trieste. It was created in 1964 to collect, conserve and exhibit the native flora of the Karst in its natural context. The garden is open from May to October with the following schedule: Tuesday -Friday: 9.30 – 13.00; Saturday - Sunday and public holidays: 10.00-13.00, 15.00-19.00. Ticket: Euro 3.00; Reduced:Euro 2.00. Guided visits: Tuesdays - Fridays at 10.00; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 10.30 and 16.00.  You can get there by bus nr. 46 from Piazza Oberdan. FLEA Market every Friday down in Sistiana Bay, in the Caravella Park from 18:00 - 23:00. You can get to Sistiana with the airport bus 51 or take bus 44 from Piazza Oberdan and walk down to the bay here there are several food and drink stalls, music and summer fun.

 

TOUR TRIESTE

The Friuli Venezia Giulia TOURIST POINT on the corner of Piazza Unità organizes guided walking tours (in Italian and English) every day at 10:30. On Saturday 11/8, there is an additional tour at 16.30 on Trieste's literarary route, that lasts 2 hours and costs euro 5/head. The office is open every day from 9.00 - 19.00. The Miramare Castle - outstandingly beautiful - is right next to the ICTP and is open every day from 9.00 to 18.30. Entrance to the surrounding park is free (8.00 - 19.00). The Duino Castle is one of the most attractive castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso royal family. From its cliff top location there is a stunning view of the sea as it overlooks a small fishing village and is surrounded by colourful, extensive gardens. Inside, you can admire the furnishings, paintings, books and mementoes collected over centuries, visit its beautiful park and the World War 2 bunker. For more info: www.castellodiduino.it

 

The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante

The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated on the Triestine Karst and an exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust.  The temperature is constantly around 11º and the tour lasts around one hour. Boat Excursions

Boat trips Trieste to Muggia or to Sistiana.

Muggia is an old Venetian fishing village (nice cafes and good fish restaurants). The "Delfino Verde" ferry Boats for Muggia depart from Molo Bersaglieri in Trieste (the dock after Piazza Unità). Tickets must be purchased on board. Return ticket euro 6.90 daily, with several schedules. If you wish to go, instead, the other way, i.e., to Sistiana, a swimming resort full of bars, cafes and music on the beach and close to the scenic Rilke path should you choose to have a nice walk in the karst that leads you to the Duino castle, you can in this case, board the boat directly at the bay of Grignano.
