ART EXHIBITIONS

Friday, 13/7 at 18.30 at Studio Tommaseo in downtown via del Monte 2/1 "DOUBLE TRACK"  (Doppia Traccia): Objects with lost traces from the recent past, an International Design Contest. This biennial contest has become a great challenge proposed to designers from 23 Central Eastern European countries. What kind of new object was the old drawing-curve turned into? The designer of this mysterious object won the Gillo Dorfles Prize! Ongoing until 13/9.   www.triestecontemporanea.it

 

"Rembrandt. Incidere la luce (Rembrandt. Engrave light) at the Stables of the Castle of Miramare, Trieste. This building was planned by Carl Junker and built between 1856 and 1860 on the road to the Castle. There are engravings by the great Dutch artist, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606 - 1669), famous painter & engraver and 3 works by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Ongoing until 7/10. Open Tuesdays to Sundays: 10.00 -13.00 / 14.30 -18.30.

 

Sala Giubileo, Via Mazzini 3 - Trieste: Exhibit by Manuela Marussi "Pneuma: the vital breath. There are 40 oil paintings on canvas produced in 2012, many paintings have not been exhibited before. MUSIC

"TriesteLovesJazz", an International Jazz Festival, ongoing till 27/7, each concert is free of charge and starts at 21.00 in Piazza Verdi  (close to Piazza Unita') :

Friday 13/7: IT DON’T MEAN A THING (IF IT AIN’T GOT THAT SWING). Performance by the Gorni Kramer Quartet, that reproposes the peculiar swing of the great Italian accordionist Kramer.  Sunday 15/7: David Helbock from Berlin: a young jazz musician and composer, defined a "shooting star of jazz piano" by the renown music critics; followed by a tribute to the great american saxophonist of the 80s: Michael Brecker. ENTERTAINMENT

The "Trieste Estate 2012" event features 6 evenings of open air movies in an amazing location: the Castle of San Giusto. The films proposed will all be screened in their original version with Italian subtitles and will start at 9.30 p.m.

Friday 13/7: Projection of the film “Dark Shadows” by Tim Burton (US 2012);

Saturday 14/7: Projection of the film “To Rome with love” by Woody Allen (Italy/Spain 2012)

Sunday 15/7: Projection of the film “The Artist” by Michel Hazanavicius (France 2011)

MUSEUMS

Visit the Oriental Art Museum in Palazzetto Leo, Via San Sebastiano 1 (close to Piazza Unita'), the first Museum in this Region specifically dedicated to Oriental Art with objects, furniture, paintings, travel souvenirs and antropological findings from China and Japan.

Entrance: full price Euro 3,50; reduced Euro 2,50 for : students below 26, youngsters from 6 - 20, groups of 10 persons. Children up to 5 years old are free of charge. Guided tours: Euro 2,70/each. Open on Wednesday from 9.00 to 13.00; Saturday & Sunday: from 11.00 to 17.00. Info: 040 6754068.

 

MISCELLANEOUS

Every Friday evening at 21.00 take part in the event "Sailing through science", at the Civic Sea Museum in Via Campo Marzio 5 where biologists, writers, musicians, sailors, historians, fishermen, students, teachers and documentarists are united by the passion and desire to tell stories about the sea and those who live close to it. On Friday 13/7: "Recalling the Zoppolo-ÿupa, stories of boats and fishermen of Santa Croce-Kriz", meeting with Franco Cossutta (Coastal Museum of Trieste), projection of a documentary by Jurii Gruden, performance of the

Visit The Victory Lighthouse (Faro della Vittoria) in Strada del Friuli. The lighthouse was built by the famous Triestine architect Berlam. It is a commemorative monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of World War I. Great for photos if it's a nice day. Open (April–September): Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sundays & Public Holidays: 16.00 - 19.00; Tuesday and Friday: 9.00 am to 12.00 am and 16.00 - 19.00. Mondays closed. Free entry. ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF TRIESTE

FLEA Market every Friday down in Sistiana Bay, in the Caravella Park from 18:00 - 23:00. You can get to Sistiana with the airport bus 51 or take bus 44 from Piazza Oberdan and walk down to the bay here there are several food and drink stalls, music and summer fun.

 

Eat at a typical Triestine "OSMIZA" or private farm house in the Carso: there are many open this weekend. The origins of the osmiza dates back to the Austrian times when the Austrian Emperor Joseph II gave permission to all his citizens to sell directly their wine and some of their own goods (cheese, eggs, bread, ham) for a period of eight days. The Carsiana Botanical Garden. Is located within a "dolina" (sinkhole) in Sgonico, 18 km from Trieste. It was created in 1964 to collect, conserve and exhibit the native flora of the Karst in its natural context. The garden is open from May to October with the following schedule: Tuesday -Friday: 9.30 – 13.00; Saturday - Sunday and public holidays: 10.00-13.00, 15.00-19.00.
