SPECIAL EVENT IN TRIESTE: "LA BARCOLANA" from 5 to 9 October

The Barcolana is one of the most famous sailing regattas in the Mediterranean Sea. The competition will take place for the 43rd time in the Gulf of Trieste on Sunday 9 October at 10:00 with over 1000 sailing boats taking part in the race. It is really a unique sight to watch either from the sea front near Barcola (bus 36) or from a higher vantage point such as the "Napoleonica" path overlooking the town (take the tram in Piazza Oberdan) or from Strada del Friuli near the Victory Light House (Faro della Vittora) reachable by bus 42 or 44 from Piazza Oberdan. There are side events on the "Rive" ,the sea promenade in front of Piazza Unità all week, live music concerts in Piazza Unità on Friday and Saturday night and kiosks and stands, offering all kinds of items ranging from sailing products to technical equipments, clothes, books, gastronomy etc. The entertainment evening in Piazza Unità will end with fireworks around 22:30. ART & CULTURAL EXHIBITIONS

Today, on the occasion of the Barcolana sailing competition, inauguration of an art exhibition ""In Arte... Ursus. E Venti sul Mare" at 18:00 on the historical URSUS Crane in MOLO IV. The exhibit is organized by the Associazione artistica Carpe Artem and presents the works of 20 artists. There will also be an accordion concert on board by Ghenadie Rotari, followed by poetry reading by actor Francesco Gumitta. The exhibition on the Ursus crane is free and will remain open until 16 October with the following timings: Everyday 15:00 - 19:00 and Sat and Sunday 10:00 - 12:00/ 15:00 - 19:00


Revoltella Museum "Caccia al Tesoro" (Treasure Hunt
) at the Contemporary Art Section, dislocated in different areas of the Museum, from the ground level to the 6th floor as in a 'treasure hunt" with interesting new works, installations, crafts, photography. Ongoing until 4 December. Entrance ticket euro 6. Open daily (except Tuesday) from 10:00 - 19:00.


Contemporary Art Exhibition "BIENNALE DIFFUSA
":  This exhibition is an extension of the renown 54th International Venice Biennale event organized by famous art critic Vittorio Sgarbi and is held at "Magazzino 26" in the old port of Trieste. From ICTP, take bus nr 6 and stop in Viale Miramare at the bus stop right after the main entrance of the show, ask the driver in case. It takes a 5-minute walk to reach the building, Magazzino 26. Entrance tickets for ICTP scientists, visitors and staff - bring your ICTP badge along - euro 6. New exhibit on the ground floor of Italian artist and sculptor Pordenone Montanari, who is considered by the international critic as the new Picasso and Cezanne. You can take bus 6 or 36 that will drop you on the main road (viale Miramare) and then proceed by foot.

the Mediterranean Diaspora from Corfu to Trieste" at the Carlo and Vera Wagner Museum in via del Monte 5. Ongoing until 20 Jan 2012. Entrance euro 5.


CLASSICAL MUSIC

Classical Music concert at the Miramare Castle on Friday 7 Oct at 20:30 in the Throne room, featuring baroque music with Dutch violinist Lidewij van der Voot and theorbist Fred Jabkods. Entrance ticket 4 euro. It is advisable to be there ahead of time as there are only 80 seats available. The concert is organized by the Wunderkammer association.


VERDI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT SEASON 2011:
 Ludwig van Beethoven, Coriolano, Overture in Do minore op.62. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Concerto in Si bemolle maggiore and Ludwig van Beethoven, Sinfonia n.7 in La maggiore op.92 , directed by Francesco Lanzillota, on Fri 7 Oct (at 20:30) and Sat 8 Oct (at 18:00). There is a 50% reduction on tickets purchased "last minute" (one hour before the show) for all performances directly at the Verdi's ticket office. ENTERTAINMENT

 "Open Space" at the Revoltella museum ongoing until 9 October: The museum's terrrace overlooking the city and with a stunning view on the bay has organized a number of food and wine tasting events as well as guided tours of various sections of the museum. The prices indicated here below include the entrance ticket to the museum. It is necessary to make reservations by calling 040 6754350. Tonight from 18:00 - 21:00: "Calici d'Arte" with wine tasting with a wine expert, this week:  Wines form the Collio and Carso plus a guided tour "Man's face and its transformation"(all-inclusive euro15. Friday 7 Oct, 18:00 - 21:00 "Azzurro e Bollicine", fish from the Gulf and sparkling wine (piano), live music, plus a guided tour to the exhibition "Vittorio Bolaffio and the port of Trieste", Sunday 9 Oct, 11:30 - 14:00, "Brunch on the Terrace" (reservation is necessary), a good way to watch the Barcolana. (All guided tours are in Italian).

(on the seaside promenade facing Piazza Unità): Tonight at 21:00, comic show (in Italian) with local entertainers and comedians Charlie Gnocchi and Andro Merku.

Sunday 9 Oct: "Barcolana Jazz" music repertoire with pop - rock music with the "Musique Boutique" group (voice, keyboards and sax) from 13:30 to 16:30

 

MISCELLANEOUS

"Carsic Octoberfest" in Prepotto (Duino Aurisina) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon until evening with music, dance exhibitions and local food specialties. Check: http://www.duinotourism.it. Bus 44 from Piazza Oberdan until Aurisina and bus 43 to Prepotto. 

 

SPECIAL GUIDED TOURS

"Trieste, literary atmospheres, an inspiration for many great writers", on Saturday 8 October t at 16:30: A 2 hours guided walking tour through the literary history, the anecdotes and the life in the city of some of the most outstanding figures in modern literature; on the imaginary and symbolic footsteps of Italo Svevo, James Joyce, Umberto Saba, Fulvio Tomizza, as well as Claudio Magris and Veit Heinichen. The tour is in Italian and English and costs euro 5/pers. It is necessary to book your place by calling the FVG Tourist Office in via dell' Orologio 1 (on the corner of Piazza Unità): 040 3478312.

 

On the occasion of the Barcolana, there will be free guided tours organized by the Associazione Giramondo (provided one pays the entrance ticket) of the following museums on Saturday 8 October:

Il Museo del Mare, (the sea museum) in via Campo Marzio 5, free guided tour at 10:30 (entrance ticket euro 4).

The Aquarium, in Molo Pescheria 2 (on the "Rive"), free guided tours at 15:00 and at 17:00. Entrance ticket euro 4,50.

 

Visit the Botanic Gardens in via Marchesetti 2, on Sunday 9 October. There will be a guided tour at 10:00 with a botanical expert to see the autumn plants and in particular sage . Bus 25

Villa Manin di Passariano in the Province of Udine

"Espressionismo" at Villa Manin di Passariano in the Province of Udine ongoing until 5 March 2012 with 100 works from the Brücke Museum of Berlin. Works by Kirchner, Heckel, Nolde, Schimdt-Rottluff, Pechstein and Mueller representing the 1905 "Die Brücker " movement in Dresden, forerunner of the expressionist movement. Venice Biennial - Biennale di Venezia, the 54th International Art Exhibition at the Giardini and Arsenale and other spots in Venice.
