WHAT'S
ON THIS WEEK 25 - 28 August 2011
ART
& CULTURAL EXHIBITIONS
New Exhibition "Fashion & Colors" inauguration on Sunday 28 August at 15:00 on the historical URSUS Crane in MOLO IV. 20 artists will exhibit their works on the crane and at 17:30 there will be a photography competition on the crane. If anyone wishes to take part, send your application to www.mc59.com or register on the same day until 17:00. The competition is organized by a joint initiative of La Bottega d'Arte "le Amebe" and the photographer Claudio Micali.
The Ursus crane was
built in 1914 and weighs 2200 tons and is
75 metres high. The floating platform on which the crane rests, is 54
metres
long and 24 metres wide. The rotating crane used to lift a load of 150
tons as
high as 70 metres on only one hook. It had 18 crew members to guarantee
the
functioning of this huge machine. It was the pride of Trieste's
dockyards and
of the busy commercial city of Trieste. It was built to lift huge
engines and
move them into the bellies of transatlantic liners, and to carry
cannons on the
Austrian navy warships. It lifted locomotives and railroad wagons and
during
the postwar period, it rescued shipwrecks that sunk in the gulfs of
Trieste and
Muggia.
Today, after years of inactivity and a recent brief renovation, it can
be
visited and often hosts art exhibitions. MOLO IV is located close to
Piazza
Duca degli Abruzzi.
