ART & CULTURAL EXHIBITIONS

Inauguration of a new exhibition on Friday 12 August at 21:15. "Signori, si parte, come viaggiavamo nella Mitteleeuropa 1815-1915" ("Gentlemen, on board; how we travelled in Europe 1815 - 1915) at the Magazzino 26. Porto Vecchio. Free entrance, ground level.

Contemporary Art Exhibition "BIENNALE DIFFUSA":  This exhibition is an extension of the renown 54th International Venice Biennale event organized by famous art critic Vittorio Sgarbi and is held at "Magazzino 26" in the old port of Trieste. From ICTP, take bus nr 6 and stop in Viale Miramare at the bus stop right after the main entrance of the show, ask the driver in case. It takes a 5-minute walk to reach the building, Magazzino 26. Entrance tickets for ICTP scientists, visitors and staff - bring your ICTP badge along - euro 6. You can take bus 6 or 36 that will drop you on the main road (viale Miramare) and then proceed by foot


"Musei di Sera" (Museums at night) ongoing until 31 August in Trieste at Palazzo Gopcevich in via Rossini 4.
The Museum has a rich collection of music instruments and theatre costumes, paintings and works of art. On this occasion it will be open to the public at night on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 20:00 - 24:00 with a rich entertainment programme that includes films, music concerts and lectures. All free. Born in Berlin, she became immersed in the Nouveau Réaliste movement of the 1960s and documented the film stars and avant-garde artists who thrived in the French capital at that time. She displays photos of friends, artists in the Nouveau Réalisme movement in Paris – Marcel Duchamp, Jean Tinguely, Robert Filliou, Niki de Saint Phalle and her ex-husband Daniel Spoerri. Other huge photos-posters of her still life shots are present. The exhibition, organized by Triestèfotografia, is at the Piscina Bianchi (Main swimming pool), Passeggio S. Andrea, 8. CLASSICAL MUSIC

Classical Music Concert at the Miramare Castle on Friday 12 August: Hemolia String Quartet, music by Mozart and Dvorak at 20:30: Entrance fee to concert and Castle: euro 4. Places are limited to 80 and allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Next on 5 August:  Piano recital with music by Beethoven and Chopin.


Free Guitar Recital with Atrei Biasuzzi and Lorenzo Mansutti at the Duino-Aurisina San Rocco Church on Friday 12 August at 21:00.


Free: Duo Flute and Guitar recital at the Monrupino Church (Monrupino is in the Carso) on Sunday 14 August at 21:00.
Take bus 42. Music by Carulli, Giuliani, Cstelnuovo Tedesco, Casas Suge' and Ibert with Federica Cecotti and Giovanni  Settimo. The concert is part of the "Neisuonideiluoghi" Festival, in collaboration with the Associazione Progetto Musica.

 

SPECIAL GUIDED TOURS

"Trieste, literary atmospheres, an inspiration for many great writers", on Saturday 13 August at 16:30: A 2 hours guided walking tour through the literary history, the anecdotes and the life in the city of some of the most outstanding figures in modern literature; on the imaginary and symbolic footsteps of Italo Svevo, James Joyce, Umberto Saba, Fulvio Tomizza, as well as Claudio Magris and Veit Heinichen. The tour is in Italian and English and costs euro 5/pers. It is necessary to book your place by calling the FVG Tourist Office in via dell' Orologio 1 (on the corner of Piazza Unità): 040 3478312.

 

A special guided to tour on Saturday 13 August "Il Carso della Grande Guerra" (The Carso during the First World War"), organized by the Associazione "Curiosi di Natura". Participants should take their own car and meet at the IAT (tourist Information Office) in Sistiana at 16:00 (Sistiana 56/B where the road goes down to the bay - bus stop 73 as well). The excursion will last approximately 3 hours and an expert guide will accompany you. The walking tour will start in S. Martino del Carso and end in Mount San Michele, where trenches and tunnels were built. You will be able to see military equipment, as well as an outstanding panoramic view of the Carso area where many battles where fought. Participation fee: euro 10/pers. On Friday 19 August there will be another tour organized in the same way but this time to visit the San Pelagio area with a walk from San Pelagio to Slivia to discover the Carsic lands and woods and to discover the main Carsic geological phenomenons such as caves, cavities (called Dolina) and the remains of the fortified village of Slivia from the bronze age.

 

Free entrance on Sundays to the Victory Lighthouse (Faro della Vittoria) from 10:00 - 15:00. The lighthouse was built by the famous Triestine architect Berlam. It is a commemorative monument dedicated to the fallen of the First World War. It is located in Strada del Friuli. Bus 42, 44 or 46 from Piazza Oberdan. Great for photos if it's a nice day.


Book a special visit to the Revoltella Museum (in via Diaz 27)  "Un Caffè con il Barone Revoltella" (Coffee with Baron Revoltella) scheduled today and 12,13 and 14 August. It is a special guided tour (in Italian) of the Baron's private apartments with two actors taking you around and playing the part of Baron Revoltella (actor Lorenzo Acquaviva) and his friend (actor Ivan Zerbinati) recounting the Baron's life and in particular his adventures in Egypt as he was one of the main financial supporters of the construction of the Suez Canal and vice president of the company. You will be invited to drink a coffee and listen to the Baron's "life adventures and confessions". No more than 35 persons per show. Ticket euro 10/pers. Every Sunday at the Miramare Castle: Included in the entrance ticket, there are free guided tours (up to 25 pers/group) at 12:00 and at 17:00. There are also free guided tours of the park at 10:30 and 15:30. For regular visits, the castle is open every day from 9:00 to 19:00. CINEMAS

Free entrance: "In this World" (G.B) by Michael Winterbottom at the San Giovanni Theatre in via Weiss (San Giovanni Park - take bus 6). The film is in Pashtu-Persian-English with subtitles in Italian) and tells the adventure of two cousins who make their way on foot, by sea and by land from a refugee camp in Kurdistan via Istanbul, Trieste, Paris and London. MISCELLANEOUS

Flower Show at the Botanic Garden of via Carlo Marchesetti on Sunday 14 August from 10:00, with a guided tour at 10:00 and a music performance with electro acoustic sounds with David Monacchi and Walter Branch at 20:00.

 

New Opening of the "Diga" (the dock facing Piazza Unita' in the middle of the Bay). It is reachable with a free shuttle boat "Arax" starting at 9:00. There is a free beach area (if you decide to bring your own sun bed you have to pay euro 8 for transportation and no food is allowed on board). There are also 4 "private" beach areas with an entrance ticket (with prices ranging form 8 - 20 euro according to the view and type of sun beds and umbrellas you rent).  The Diga provides a restaurant service (mainly fish) and a Bar Lounge as well. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, music and dance with DJ from 19:00 to 1:00 and Sundays, "after beach party" until 22:30.

 

"Sapori del Golfo" ongoing until 12 September: Stands and kiosks serve fresh fish from the Gulf of Trieste cooked in the typical Triestine way such as the fried "sardoni" (sardines)! Music and entertainment as well. Venue at the Scalo Legnami - Ex Gaslini (close to the Torri d'Europa Shopping Center - take bus 8) open on Saturdays 18:00 - 23:00 and Sundays 12:00 - 14:30 / 18:00 - 23:00.

 

"Estate in Movimento" (Free Open Air Sports) in Barcola Pineta, ongoing until 31 August: Sports, gym, yoga, aerobics, water gym, and much more with qualified staff in and around the "Barcola pine woods" from Monday to Friday for adults and children.
