SPECIAL GUIDED TOUR FOR ICTP VISITORS, SCIENTISTS AND STAFF on Saturday 27 March 2010 to
AQUILEIA and GRADO.
AQUILEIA is one of the most interesting sites in the Region, an ancient marshland settlement, with a 700-year Roman period dating back to 181 B.C. There are old Roman mosaics in the basilica and old Roman ruins spread out in a lovely landscape. The next stop will be in GRADO, a small town built on a lagoon with many historical connections with Venice and Aquileia.  The discounted contribution requested for the tour is only 5,00 euro /head - payable when you sign up - with an optional extra 2.50 euro/head entrance if you want to visit the crypt payable on the spot on the day of the trip. ATTENTION PLEASE: MEETING POINT with our English-speaking guide Ms Alessandra LODI at 13:45 in Grignano near bus stop 36. Return time to Trieste is fixed at approximately 20:00.


Special evening at the ICTP on Monday 29 March open to all Scientists, Visitors and Staff & Families - Concert and Dinner -

The Choir of the United World College of the Adriatic, UWC, has been invited to ICTP and will perform a Concert in the Main Lecture Hall at the Leonardo Building on Monday 29 March at around 18:00.The large group of UWC students, conducted by Maestro Stefano Sacher will sing madrigal songs, spirituals, pop music and folk songs. During the concert, there will also be an extraordinary performance of a Moldovan student, Ghenadje Rotari, who will play the accordion.

Following the concert, there will be a Special "Welcome to Spring" dinner organized for the occasion in the Cafeteria of the Leonardo Building with a choice of special dishes.

 

CLASSICAL MUSIC

"Aperitivo in Musica" at the auditorium of the United World College in Duino on Sun 28 March at 11:00. The concert is organized by the Scuola Superiore Internazionale di Musica da Camera Trio di Trieste and the UWC: Concert for piano and violin with Castagnoli and Morandi, music by Ravel and Prokoviev. Free entrance, following the concert there will be an aperitif offered to the public.

The Tartini Music Conservatory offers a series of free concerts every Wednesday. Forthcoming concert on Wed 31 March at 20:30: Guitar concert with Vlatko Bocevski "After John Dowland".

ART & EXHIBITIONS

New exhibition at the Duino Castle until 15 Nov "The Emperor at Duino" with more than 400 objects with the image of the Emperor Franz Joseph, the Habsburg family and the alliance with Wilhelm II of Prussia. You may also like to visit the exhibition of musical instruments, the Orpheon collection ongoing until Nov 1. ICTP badge holders pay euro 4,50 for entrance to the Castle. Art Workshop for Children at the Revoltella Museum in Via Diaz 27, on Sunday 28 March, f
or children aged 7 - 10, at 10:00 and children aged 4 - 6 in the afternoon from 16:00 - 18:00. The workshop is on the art of "Collage” that started during the cubist period and in particular with Picasso. Children will be accompanied by an expert to visit the exhibition on Futurism and the works of Depero and Carmelich and will spend 2 hours to learn how to make create a poster or a collage or even learn how to write a poem, learn the art of scenography etc. The cost for children for the guided tour and the workshop is euro 4,50 while the entrance fee for parents or adults accompanying their children is euro 6,50 that includes a free-guided tour of the exhibition and this week's concert: Gorni Kramer Quartet and Martina Ferri at 11:00 For more info, check: http://www.museorevoltella.it


"The Evolution of an idea" at the Immaginario Scientifico in collaboration with WWF Italy
(Riva Massimiliano e Carlotta 15, in Grignano beneath the Adriatico Guest House). The exhibition presents multivision projections on themes related to Darwin's theory of evolution from the origins of species to biodiversity, on genetics and the mechanisms of reproduction, on natural selection and biodiversity. On Sun 28 march at 11:00, Marco Costantini (WWF Italy) will give a talk on the evolution of fish. The exhibition is ongoing until 30 May, open only Sundays 10:00 - 20:00. GUIDED TOURS

Visit the Castle of Strassoldo, one of the oldest inhabited castles in the Region close to Cervignano del Friuli in the Province of Udine. The castle will be exceptionally open for the public only this weekend on the occasion of the XIII edition "In Primavera: Fiori, Acque e Castelli" on Sat 27 and Sun 28 from 9:00 - 19:00. The entrance is euro 10 and will give you access to the visit of the two castles, the beautiful park and gardens. There will also be a number of stands with antique furniture, crafts, jewellery, paintings, perfumes, rare plants and all kinds of local food and products on sale. You may also join the free-guided tours of the nearby villages and surroundings on both days. The Sartorio Museum is an ancient 18th century Villa of noble Genovese origins. There will be a guided tour of the Villa every Sunday from 21 March to 13 June starting at 10:30 (the museum will close for Easter on 4 April). You may visit the Villa's beautiful rooms with its antique furniture and learn about the history of Trieste through the lives of the Sartorio family members. The museum has a number of important art collections such as the Tiepolo Veneziano works and more recently those of Fittke. There will also be a free-guided tour of the museum for children aged 6 -11 (the guides will talk about the lives of the Sartorio children in the 1800s) followed by an art workshop for children aged 6 -11 every Sunday at 10:30. Ski in the Region, last snow!
For those of you who would like to ski or just visit the ski resorts in the Region, there is a wide choice: Piancavallo, Zoncolan, Tarvisio, and Forni di Sopra (these will close  the ski season on 5 April while Sella Nevea will remain open until 2 May). You may rent skis and boots on the spot but not ski suits. There is also a new bus service from Udine Central Bus station that will take you to Tarvisio or Sella Nevea.
