CLASSICAL MUSIC

Opera at the Trieste Verdi Theatre: L'Elisir d'Amore by Donizetti ongoing until Sat 20 March. There is a 50% reduction on tickets purchased "last minute" (one hour before the show) for all performances directly at the Verdi's ticket office. Verdi Symphony Orchestra concert at the Sala Tripcovich on Sun 21 March at 17:30.
The orchestra, directed by Paolo Longo will play music by Fiume, Respighi, Margola and Ravel. Tickets may be purchased directly at the theatre's box office half an hour before the show. The Tripcovich is situated close to the Central Train Station in Piazza Libertà.


Miela Theatre in Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi:
Piano Festival on Sat 20 March at 21:00 with a very talented young pianist, Antonio Di Deddawho who has won numerous music awards. He will play music by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. For more info: http://www.miela.it. Free entrance.

The Tartini Music Conservatory offers a series of free concerts every Wednesday. Forthcoming concert on Wed 24 March at 20:30: A Trio Ensemble for flute, oboe and piano, music by Delanoff, Gaubert, Arnold, Stravinsky, Demersserman, Berthelemy.

ART & EXHIBITIONS

Art Workshop for Children at the Revoltella Museum in Via Diaz 27, on Sunday 21 March, for children aged 7 - 10, at 10:00 and children aged 4 - 6 in the afternoon from 16:00 - 18:00. The workshop is on the art of "Collage” that started during the cubist period and in particular with Picasso. Children will be accompanied by an expert to visit the exhibition on Futurism and the works of Depero and Carmelich and will spend 2 hours to learn how to make create a poster or a collage or even learn how to write a poem, learn the art of scenography etc. The cost for children for the guided tour and the workshop is euro 4,50 while the entrance fee for parents or adults accompanying their children is euro 6,50 that includes a free-guided tour of the exhibition. New exhibition at the Duino Castle from 20 to 31 March: Historical musical instruments, collection Orpheon (open 9:30 - 16:00).

"The Evolution of an idea" at the Immaginario Scientifico in collaboration with WWF Italy
(Riva Massimiliano e Carlotta 15, in Grignano beneath the Adriatico Guest House). The exhibition presents multivision projections on themes related to Darwin's theory of evolution from the origins of species to biodiversity, on genetics and the mechanisms of reproduction, on natural selection and biodiversity. The exhibition is ongoing until 30 May, open only Sundays 10:00 - 20:00. Check: http:// www.immaginarioscientifico.it.

GUIDED TOURS

The Sartorio Museum is an ancient 18th century Villa of noble Genovese origins. There will be a guided tour of the Villa every Sunday from 21 March to 13 June starting at 10:30 (the museum will close for Easter on 4 April). You may visit the Villa's beautiful rooms with its antique furniture and learn about the history of Trieste through the lives of the Sartorio family members. The museum has a number of important art collections such as the Tiepolo Veneziano works and more recently those of Fittke. There will also be a free-guided tour and an art workshop for children aged 6 -11 on Sun 21 March at 10:30. For more info call 040 301479. CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS

"International Poetry Prize Castello di Duino" 19 - 21 March, VI edition. On the occasion of the International Day of Poetry organized by Unesco, there will be workshops, poetry readings and a photo exhibition in different places in and around Trieste. The event is entirely devoted to young poets from all over the world under 30 years of age. This year's winner is Patrice Major Asse Eloundou from Cameroun with the poem "La métaphore du véstige collectif).The official prize ceremony will take place at the Duino Castle on Sunday 21 March at 16:30.The awarded poems will be read in their origninal language and in Italian. "Trieste Brain Awareness Week" ongoing until 21 March
presents a series of conferences open to the general public and held in different places in Trieste  (such as the Caffè San Marco and some  theatres. The seminars are organized by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives with the coordination of the International Brain research Organization. You may rent skis and boots on the spot but not ski suits. There is also a new bus service from Udine Central Bus station that will take you to Tarvisio or Sella Nevea.
