  Special guided tour to

The DUINO CASTLE and the GROTTA GIGANTE

The Duino Castle was built in the 14th century on high cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Trieste and  surrounded by a beautiful park. The castle is still the home of the Prince della Torre e Tasso and has hosted many famous visitors and artists through the centuries. One can admire a large variety of precious furnishings, paintings and historical documents and the striking panorama from the dining-room terrace.

The Grotta Gigante or Giant Cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world and is situated on the Triestine Karst (Carso). It has an enormous hall: 107 meters high, 130 meters long and 65 metres large. Another feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust. The cave contains many large stalactites and stalagmites, many of exceptional beauty.

The discounted contribution requested for the guided tour is euro 5,00/person. There will also be a discounted entrance fee to the Castle, (euro 4,50/pers) payable when you sign up at the Info Point counter (Leonardo Building).

The entrance fee to the Cave will be free exclusively for this tour, a special one-time bonus for our ICTP scientists.
