Update on renovation works at ICTP

Dear colleagues,

Please find hereafter a brief update on our effort to renovate part of 
the campus.

In the last years, the heating unit and air-conditioning unit had been 
replaced together with the main distribution system of the hot/cold 
liquid to heat/cool the air inside the Leonardo Building.

The area of the Euler lecture room has been renovated and is nearing the 
completion. The designing concept to combine wood, concrete with large 
glass panels and windows will be re-used again in our next major 
project: the renovation of the ICTP Library.

As a first step, the library will be emptied. The collection of e-books 
is growing and journals are available online. The collection of the 
journals have been shipped to a specialized company in Germany to enable 
the re-use of them. Soon the remaining books and the Salam's room will 
be moved another location at ICTP. It is foreseen that the library will 
be completely emptied in the upcoming months and works will start to 
renovate the air treatment installation (heating/air-conditioning). The 
renovation works will proceed during year and a re-opening is foreseen 
in 2026. A message regarding the library services during the renovation 
period will be provided soon.

As part of compliance with UN Security measures, the Security Post will 
be moved outside the Leonardo Building to a customised cabin by the end 
of April. In order to ease congestion during peak periods, staff and 
long term visitors will be able to enter via the Terrace door, which 
will have speed-gates to ensure badged entry. These measures ensure that 
visitors without a badge have to pass by Security. Other parts of the 
plan for 2025-26 include: alternative badge access methods for ad-hoc 
but pre-invited visitors; security bollards controlling vehicle access 
near LB and EFB; and securing the LB terrace with fences to control 
access from the outside.

In late 2025, it is planned to start works  to improve the energy 
efficiency of the remaining space in the Leonardo. This will include air 
treatment, electrical upgrades and window renovation.

The planned works in 2025 will have no implications on the operations of 
the centre.

A further update on the planned works will be provided by the end of 
April 2025.
