Quantum Technology Day at ICTP

On Wednesday 14 March, ICTP will host two important events--the Dirac
Medal ceremony and a public roundtable--related to quantum technologies.
Both events are free and open to all:

1. DIRAC MEDAL CEREMONY, 14:30, Budinich Lecture Hall: ICTP will honour
the three recipients of the 2017 award: Charles H. Bennett (IBM TJ
Watson Research Center), David Deutsch (University of Oxford) and Peter
W. Shor (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The three are being
recognized for their ground-breaking work in applying fundamental
concepts of quantum mechanics to solving basic problems in computation
and communication, bringing together the fields of quantum mechanics,
computer science, and information theory.

The award ceremony will be preceded by two lectures by Peter Zoller, a
professor at the University of Innsbruck working in quantum optics, and
Artur Ekert, a professor of quantum physics and cryptography at
University of Oxford. More details about the event can be found at

2. PUBLIC ROUNDTABLE, "Quantum Technologies: Dawn of a New Industrial
Revolution", 18:30, Savoia Excelsior Palace, Trieste: The event will
feature panellists representing three key players in quantum technology:

--Hartmut Neven, Google's Director of Engineering
--Alessandro Curioni, IBM Fellow, Vice President of IBM Europe and
Director of the IBM Research Lab in Zurich
--Tommaso Calarco, Director, Institute for Complex Quantum Systems,
University of Ulm and member of the expert group for the European
Commission's Quantum Technology Flagship

Co-sponsored by ICTP and SISSA and moderated by science journalist
Simona Regina, the event will offer simultaneous translation. More
