Dear colleagues,
You are cordially invited to attend the 2018 International Day of Women
and Girls in Science events happening this week at ICTP and in downtown
Trieste. The International Day puts a spotlight on the challenges and
opportunities for women scientists, and asks the question: why are there
fewer women than men in science? This year ICTP, together with OWSD and
SISSA, are organizing two public events and one event for
secondary-school students:
--Wednesday, 7 February, 18:00 to 19:30, Caffé San Marco: ICTP, OWSD,
and SISSA are jointly hosting a discussion on the challenges facing
women in science and the barriers that still prevent full participation
and access, with specific focus on the environment in Trieste.
Representatives of Trieste scientific institutions will be present, and
all attendees will be invited to speak. Tonya Blowers of OWSD will be
moderating, and light refreshments will be available. More details are
here: https://www.facebook.com/events/114355162666310/
--Friday, 9 February, 10:00 to 14:00, ICTP Reading Room (next to bar),
Leonardo Building: visit an exhibit of statistics, success stories, and
strategies regarding women in science. Cookies, stickers, and a mad
scientist-themed carnevale photo booth also await!
--Friday, 9 February, 10:00 to 11:00, Luigi Stasi Seminar Room:
Secondary-school students will meet with ICTP and SISSA post-docs, who
will describe why they are scientists and what they do day to day, in
addition to answering students’ questions about challenges and
opportunities in science careers.
