Dear All,

ICTP will celebrate the first winner of the new ICTP Walter Kohn Prize
during an award ceremony which will take place on Friday 13 January at
9.00 am in the Budinich Lecture Hall, Leonardo Building. You are all
most welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be held at the end of
the ceremony.

The first Walter Kohn Prize has been awarded to Prof. Yanming Ma from
Jilin University, Changchun, P.R. of China for his outstanding
contributions in the field of quantum-mechanical materials and molecular
modeling. Ma will give a talk on "Atomistic Structure Prediction via
Swarm Intelligence Algorithms".

Walter Kohn, who passed away last year, had a long and creative career
included faculty appointments at Carnegie Mellon, UC San Diego, and UC
Santa Barbara, where he was the founding director of the Kavli Institute
for Theoretical Physics, and was a close supporter and friend of ICTP.

Kohn and John Pople were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998
for their contributions to our understanding of electronic properties of
materials, including the development of density functional theory.
