Measurement of the Hawking Temperature for an Analog Horizon

Hawking's prediction that black holes would radiate due to a quantum
instability near the horizon has a much wider applicability. A group at
UBC has for the first time measured the process, in that case for a
horizon for surface waves in water and shown the quantum emission is
thermal, with temperature related to the properties of the horizon, as for
black holes.
