*ART EXHIBITIONS*

*Last few days at* *Cafe' Stella Polare *(Via Dante 14): Solo painting 
exhibition by Triestine artist Furio BOMBEN with typical Triestine 
panoramas (the Karst, the Gulf, houses, alleys). His unique technique is 
a mixture of pencil, Indian ink and tempera colours. Ongoing until 3/9.

*At the Modern Art Gallery "Salone degli Incanti" *(once a fishmarket) 
in Riva Nazario Sauro, an outstanding Photography exhibition by 
photoreporter *Monica Bulaj: "Nur/Luce ­ Appunti afgani" *(Afghan

*At Civic Museum Sartorio - Ongoing until 10/9: *

*"Blooming Salons. Still Life in Municipal Museums"*. The exhibition 
includes about 30 works (paintings, drawings and some embroderies) on 
flowers and fruit. Some of them are part of Sartorio's furnitures, 
others come from different collections. Special ICTP Price: Euro 3,50. 
The guided tour starts each day as per following schedule: 10.30, 11.30, 
12.00, 13.00, 13.30, 14.30, 15.00, 16.00, 16.30, 17.30.

*"Serendipity in a park of books. The dream of an English garden". *The 
exhibition is about the great love and interest for gardens of Baron 
Giovanni Guglielmo Sartorio, owner of the neoclassic villa which hosts 
the Museum named after his family. He studied botanics and English 
gardening for decades.**

*At the Revoltella* *Museum* (in cooperation with the Cappella 
Underground): within the event Revoltella Estate / Art&Cinema: *On 30/8 
*at 20.30: *TORMENTI* - *FILM DISEGNATO* (by Filiberto Scarpelli, one of 
the greatest screenwriters in film history). It tells the story of a 
"menage a trois" which starts in Rome during the Fascist period and ends

ICTP and is open every day from 9.00 to 18.30. Entrance to the

*The Duino Castle* is one of the most attractive castles in Europe and 
is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso royal family. From 
its cliff top location there is a stunning view of the sea as it 
overlooks a small fishing village and is surrounded by colourful, 
extensive gardens. Inside, you can admire the furnishings, paintings, 
books and mementoes collected over centuries, visit its beautiful park

*The Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante*

The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world, situated 
on the Triestine Karst and an exclusive feature of the cave is the 
horizontal pendulum, constructed by university researchers in order to 
calculate the slightest movements of the earth's crust. The temperature 
is constantly around 11º and the tour lasts around one hour. For more

*_CAFES, FOOD AND WINE IN TRIESTE_*__

_Trieste's historical cafes_: The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and 
the San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) are places where writers, 
intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art 
exhibits and musical evenings are held there.

_Best ice cream in town_: Gelateria Zampolli, in via Ghega near the 
train station or in Viale XX Settembre, where ice creams are made in the 
traditional way with over 68 flavours.

_Renown Triestine Buffet in town_: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 
3: a typical Triestine old-fashioned food place where one can have 
excellent ham sandwiches at the bar or enjoy the special house dish, a 
variety of meats served with sauerkraut and freshly grated horseradish. 
Good selection of wines and beers. Reviewed by the New York Times as the 
best in the Region.

_Traditional pastry shops,_ dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty " 
style:* "La* *Bomboniera"* in via XXX Ottobre. (near Piazza San Antonio) 
and *"Pasticceria* *Pirona"* in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce 
used to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in 
Italy.

_Milic_, Localita' Sgonico (Sagrado) in the Carso, offers exellent local 
wines and typical Carso specialities (mainly soups, grilled meats, home

specialities, own production of goat cheese, omelettes, good selection

*"Konji na Krasu" - Cavalli sul Carso (Horse Traditional Festival) *in 
Ceroglie (near Sistiana), from 31/8 to 2/9, from 10.00 to 19.00. Three 
days of equestrian games, horse & carriage rides, music, dancing and 
food in western style. In Piazza Oberdan take Bus nr.44 to Aurisina 
Municipio, then Bus nr.43 to Ceroglie.

*Watch* *over two hundred 20th century historical videos on Trieste*, 
gathered by the Luce Institute (set up in 1924) now available on line.

*Every Friday evening at 21.00 - until 7/9- take part in the event 
"Sailing through science",* at the Civic Sea Museum in Via Campo Marzio 
5 where biologists, writers, musicians, sailors, historians, fishermen, 
students, teachers and documentarists are united by the passion and 
desire to tell stories about the sea and those who live close to it. _On 
Friday 31/8_: "Respiro Adriatico. Un mare intimo e selvaggio", with 
Fabio Fiori, Journalist and writer. Free entrance. Bus nr. 15 from 
Piazza Oberdan every 20' until 21.30.

*Visit The Victory Lighthouse *(Faro della Vittoria) in Strada del 
Friuli. The lighthouse was built by the famous Triestine architect 
Berlam. It is a commemorative monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers 
of World War I. Great for photos if it's a nice day. Open 
(April--September):

*NATURE AT ITS BEST:*

*"La Napoleonica" Panoramic route* mostly overlooking the sea, Trieste

Take Bus 4 from Piazza Oberdan to the "Obelisco" and go walking or 
jogging on the Napoleonica (Napoleon's path). If you wish, you can take 
path number 12 (marked by C.A.I - Italian Alpine Club) and reach the 
Sanctuary of Monte Grisa, proceed to Opicina through the Via Crucis path 
(number 12) and finally return to the Obelisk and take the bus back to 
the city (approx. 2 hours for the whole tour, 1 hour only for 
"Napoleon's path).

*Hiking in Val Rosandra (half or full day), Trieste*

/Provided the weather is fine and sunny, t/he Val Rosandra Valley 
encloses a remarkable natural environment and a walk through its paths, 
and by the stream and natural ponds, surrounded by typical carsic 
vegetation is worth it. Make sure you have good sneakers on and enough 
water. Walk along colour-marked footpaths, each marked by CAI (Italian 
Alpine Club), ranging from very easy paths to others that require a 
certain ability. There are easily accessible caves for speleology and 
archaeology lovers. You can reach the Valley by taking Bus 40 from the 
Central Train Station in Trieste and get off in Bagnoli della Rosandra.

*The Natural Reserve Park of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Dolomite Alps* 
outside Trieste- go by car or by train - organizes interesting guided
