FREE-TIME ACTIVITIES
25-28 OCTOBER

EXHIBITS DOWNTOWN

Visit the Permanent International Art collection at the ITIS (Senior 
citizens' home) in via Pascoli 31 (after Ospedale Maggiore) belonging 
to the United Nations of the Arts Academy. This is the first time in 
Italy that this type of Institution hosts such a vast collection: 300 
paintings and sculptures created by Italian and international artists 
from 30 countries.

International Antique Fair Exhibition 27 Oct- 4 Nov at the Salone degli 
Incanti (Ex- Pescheria, Bus 8, seaside front after Piazza Unità). You 
can admire antique furniture, jewellery, carpets, paintings, glassware, 
books and rare ancient prints.
Opening hours: 28-29-30-31 Oct, 2 Nov from 15:00-22:00 and 28 Oct, 
1-3-4 Nov from 10:00-20:00. Entrance ticket €9. For more info, check

First Autumn Exhibition of Triestine Art (18 Oct-4 Nov), a collection 
of contemporary works of artists, painters sculptures from Trieste, at 
the Palazzo Costanzi (Passo Costanzi,1) near Trieste's Townhall behind 
Piazza Unità. Opening hours 10:00-13:00 and 17:00-20:00

"Casorati, Dipingere il Silenzio", a retrospective exhibition of the 
artist's main works from the early 1900 to the 1950s, at the Revoltella 
Museum in Via Diaz 27, until 4 November.

MUSIC and CONCERTS

Symphony Music at the Verdi Theatre: Friday 20:30 and Sunday 17:30, 
Richard Wagner, "Tristan und Isolde" and Anton Bruckner " symphony nr 7 
in mi maggiore, directed by Stefan Soltesz. For more info and tickets

people under 26: 5 euro (gallery seats) for performances on Friday, 
Saturday or Sunday.

Wunderkammer 2007 at the Sartorio Museum, Sala Giorgio Costantinides, 
"la Quatrième Chambre" Ancient Court Music under King Louis of France, 
played by the Ensemble Hermosuras" on Thursday 25 at...

Free Concert in Piazza Goldoni, dedicated to the War Victims on 
Saturday 27 at 18:00 with a number of bands and local groups 
performing.

International Jazz and Wine Festival in Cormons, Gorizia 25-28 Oct. The 
venue is at the Teatro Comunale in Cormons. An exceptional number of 
jazz musicians from many countries including the US will be performing 
and there will also be wine tasting from the famous Collio vineyards. 
The Fesitval is organized by the Circolo Culturale Controtempo; check 
www.controtempo.org for programme and tickets.  You can reach Cormons 
by APT Bus 51 from Trieste to Monfalcone (half an hour) take the 
connection APT Bus 8 to Gorizia (half an hour) and finally Apt Bus 2 to

SPECIAL EVENTS:

INTERNATIONAL AUDIO-VIDEO CONFERENCE AT THE MIELA THEATRE 25-27 
OCTOBER: " Culture for a society with no barriers" organized by the 
Unesco Centre in Trieste, Amici della Gioventù, Associazione 
Esperantista Triestina and in collaboration with the University of 
Trieste. The promotion of culture as a vehicle for overcoming social 
and material poverty through intercultural dialogue will be the central 
theme of these 3 days.  There will be a series of talks, lectures, DVD 
projection and concerts: The Macedonian Women's Choir, Mishara Deobrad 
and composer Fabio Jegher performing "oriental jazz with  Islamic Hindu 
sounds". The Miela Theatre is situated in Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi 3.

PUMPKIN FAIR IN VENZONE 27-28 October
Celebrating the pumpkin and pumpkin specialties. Re-enactment in 
medieval costume, exhibitions and displays.
Musicians, jugglers, noblewomen and knights in the historic centre of 
the small medieval town. Pumpkins are everywhere: in the market square, 
in shop windows, in bars and restaurants, cooked in all kinds of ways 
to satisfy even the most demanding connoisseur; pumpkins of varied 
shapes and sizes, even measured with a special instrument 
“pumpkin-rule. There is even a prize for the best carved and decorated 
pumpkin. A special acknowledgement goes to the heaviest pumpkin (more 
than 400 kilos!).
To get there: train from Trieste, 2 hours trip, change in Udine or 
Cervignano.


MUSEUMS
The following website gives details of all museums in Trieste and the

The Sartorio Museum: visit the permanent collections on display (Largo 
Papa Giovanni XXIII), and the "Histria" exhibition of restored works of 
art by Paolo Veneziano and Tiepolo.  Open Mon-Fri 10-17, Sat 10-13. 
Closed on Sundays and holidays. The Sartorio Museum is situated in 
Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII (close to the Stazione Marittima,) you can 
take Bus 8. Check website: www.triestecultura.

The National Antarctica Museum: See the section on the history of 
exploration, the instruments used for the study of ice and the new 
section on the study of meteorites, films and a bookshop. Friday, 
Saturday and Sunday 9:00-13:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, via Weiss 13.

The new Paleontology room in the Natural History Museum of Trieste: You 
can see the most important discoveries made in the Triestine Karst:  
the largest skull of any living bear dating back to 300,000 years ago 
(life-size reconstruction), fossilized remains of crocodile sand 
reptiles, a complete hadrosaur skeleton of 4m long and 1.3m tall. The 
museum is in Piazza Hortis, 4. Opening hours from 8:30 -13:30, 
Tuesday-Sunday.


VISIT TRIESTE AND SURROUNDINGS

Trieste on Foot
There are guided walking tours (in Italian and English) of Trieste on 
weekends and public holidays, starting at 15:00. The tour lasts 2 hours 
and costs 5 Euro (children under 12 go free).  Book your place at the 
Tourist Bureau (TURISMO FVG Trieste, in Piazza Unità). Tel. 
040-3478312.

Trieste by Boat to Muggia
You can travel from the Molo Pescheria  (second dock after Piazza 
Unita') to Muggia with the "Delfino Verde" shuttle boat to visit the 
Istro-Venetian fishing village. Take advantage to admire Trieste from

bus 20 from the Train Station all the way to the center of Muggia.

The San Giusto Castle (Saint Just) built between 1470 and 1630, rises 
up from the hill in the heart of the ancient city centre of Trieste. 
You can visit the castle museum and the armoury. Outside the Castle 
walls you can also visit the cathedral built in the 14th century, and 
admire its beautiful mosaics. You can also see in the surroundings the 
remains of the ancient Roman city dating back to the first and second 
century.  Take bus 10 from the train station to Piazza Sansovino and 
walk up or go to Piazza Unità and walk up).

The Miramare Castle is really close to the ICTP and is open every day 
from 9.am to 7 p.m. However the park is open until 17:00 in Oct and 
Nov. There is a free- guided tour of the park every Sunday at 11.30 and 
2.30 p.m. Entrance ticket to the Castle 4 euro (show your ICTP badge in 
order to have a reduction for entry). For more info:

The Duino Castle is without doubt among one of the most attractive 
castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e 
Tasso royal family.  It was recently opened up to the public for the 
first time.  From its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing 
village and is surrounded by extensive gardens.  Inside, you can see 
the furnishings, pictures, books and mementoes collected over 
centuries. There is also the exhibition of Rainer Maria Rilke " The 
Poet And His Angels", from 22nd July to 21st October a collection of 
documents, photographs (some of which depict the poet himself), 
manuscripts and a biography of the poet. Rilke was a guest at Duino 
Castle in 1912 and wrote the famous poems " Elegie Duinesi".

THE CARSO
The Grotta Gigante or Giant Cave
The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world. It is 
situated on the Triestine Karst (Carso), half an hour from the city 
center. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, 
constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the 
slightest movements of the earth's crust. You can easily get there by 
bus 42 from the Central Train Station in Trieste and get off at Borgo 
Grotta-Sgonico.Visiting hours from 10 a.m to16:00. Entrance ticket: 
Euro 8,50/person or Euro 4,50/person for a group of 15.

La Napoleonica or Napoleon's path, panoramic walk overlooking the city.
Take the Tram to Opicina from Piazza Oberdan or take bus 4 to the 
"Obelisco" and go walking or jogging on the Napoleonica  (Napoleon's 
path), at the end you will find a parking area and at this point, you 
can take path number 12 (marked by C.A.I - Italian Alpine Club) and 
reach the Temple of Monte Grisa, return to Opicina through the Via 
Crucis path (number 12) and finally return to the Obelisk and take the 
bus back to the city. (Approx. 2 hours for the whole tour, 1 hour only 
for  "Napoleon's" path).

Hiking in Val Rosandra
The Val Rosandra Valley encloses a remarkable natural environment and a 
walk through its paths, and by the stream and natural ponds, surrounded 
by typical Carsic vegetation is worth it, provided you have a good 
supply of water with you as it can be very hot this season. Make sure 
you have good sneakers on.
Walk along colour-marked footpaths, each marked by CAI (Italian Alpine 
Club), ranging from very easy paths to others that require some 
ability. There are easily accessible caves for speleologist and 
archaeology lovers. You can reach the Valley by taking Bus 40 from the 
Central Train Station in Trieste and get off in Bagnoli della 
Rosandra.The excursion may last around 3 hours.

The Joseph Ressel path in Basovizza
This is an interesting and innovative way to learn about the Carso 
woods, fauna, plants, and geology. This walk is one of the first in 
Europe to be equipped with infrared transmitters system that will give 
you vocal info in English Italian or Slovene regarding environmental 
and historical peculiarities of the Carso territory. A receiver can be 
collected at no charge at the "Centro didattico naturalistico" 
(naturalistic educational centre) located at the entrance of the town 
of Basovizza (Via Gruden 34). You can reach the town of Basovizza by 
city Bus 51 from Trieste Train Station. For more info see

CAFES, FOOD AND WINE

Trieste's historical cafes:  The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and 
the San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) are places where writers, 
intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art 
exhibits and musical evenings are held there.
Best ice cream in town: Gelateria Zampolli, in via Ghega near the train 
station or in Viale XX Settembre, where ice creams are made in the 
traditional way with over 68 flavours.
Best Buffet in town: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3: a typical 
old-fashioned fast food bar with a Mittel-European atmosphere. You can 
have excellent ham sandwiches at the bar, or enjoy the special house 
dish; a variety of cold cuts served with sauerkraut and freshly grated 
horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Recently reviewed by 
the New York Times as the best in the Region.
Best chocolate and pastry shop: "Pasticceria Orocolato" in Via Cassa di 
Risparmio nr 9.
Excellent pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty" 
style: "La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre. (Near Piazza San Antonio) 
and "Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used 
to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in 
Italy.

Agriturismo or Farm House Restaurants:
Milic, Localita' Sgonico (Sagrado) in the Carso, offers exellent local 
wines and typical Carso specialities (mainly soups, grilled meats, home 
made gnocchi and pasta) tel: 040 327120. Take Bus 46 from Trieste Train 
Station.
Mezza Luna, in Duino Aurisina (Malchina), wide range of meat 
specialities, own production of goat cheese, omelettes, good selection

43 from Duino.
Al Pescaturismo, at the Villaggio del Pescatore, where you are served
