EXHIBITS DOWNTOWN
Inauguration on Friday 19 October at 18:00 at the ITIS (Senior
citizens' home) in via Pascoli 31 (after Ospedale Maggiore) of the
Permanent International Art Collection belonging to the United Nations
of the Arts Academy. This is the first time in Italy that this type of
Institution hosts such a vast collection: 300 paintings and sculptures
created by Italian and international artists from 30 countries.
First Autumn Exhibition of Triestine Art (18 Oct-4 Nov), a collection
of contemporary works of artists, painters sculptures from Trieste, at
the Palazzo Costanzi (Passo Costanzi,1) near Trieste's Townhall behind
Piazza Unità. opening hours 10:00-13:00 and 17:00-20:00
"Casorati, Dipingere il Silenzio", a retrospective exhibition of the
artist's main works from the early 1900 to the 1950s, at the Revoltella
Museum in Via Diaz 27, until 4 November.
MUSEUMS

The Sartorio Museum: visit the permanent collections on display (Largo
Papa Giovanni XXIII), and the "Histria" exhibition of restored works of
art by Paolo Veneziano and Tiepolo. Open Mon-Fri 10-17, Sat 10-13.
Closed on Sundays and holidays. The Sartorio Museum is situated in
Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII (close to the Stazione Marittima,) you can
take Bus 8. Check website: www.triestecultura.
The National Antarctica Museum: See the section on the history of
exploration, the instruments used for the study of ice and the new
section on the study of meteorites, films and a bookshop. Friday,
Saturday and Sunday 9:00-13:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, via Weiss 13.
The new Paleontology room in the Natural History Museum of Trieste: You
can see the most important discoveries made in the Triestine Karst:
the largest skull of any living bear dating back to 300,000 years ago
(life-size reconstruction), fossilized remains of crocodile sand
reptiles, a complete hadrosaur skeleton of 4m long and 1.3m tall. The
museum is in Piazza Hortis, 4. Opening hours from 8:30 -13:30,
Tuesday-Sunday.
VISIT TRIESTE AND SURROUNDINGS
Trieste on Foot
There are guided walking tours (in Italian and English) of Trieste on
weekends and public holidays, starting at 15:00. The tour lasts 2 hours
and costs 5 Euro (children under 12 go free). Book your place at the
Tourist Bureau (TURISMO FVG Trieste, in Piazza Unità). Tel.

Trieste by Boat to Muggia
You can travel from the Molo Pescheria (second dock after Piazza
Unita') to Muggia with the"Delfino Verde" shuttle boat to visit the
Istro-Venetian fishing village. Take advantage to admire Trieste from

Have a look at Muggia on: http://www.muggia.info/. (You can also take
bus 20 from the Train Station all the way to the center of Muggia.
The San Giusto Castle (Saint Just) built between 1470 and 1630, rises
up from the hill in the heart of the ancient city centre of Trieste.
You can visit the castle museum and the armoury. Outside the Castle
walls you can also visit the cathedral built in the 14th century, and
admire its beautiful mosaics. You can also see in the surroundings the
remains of the ancient Roman city dating back to the first and second
century. Take bus 10 from the train station to Piazza Sansovino and
walk up or go to Piazza Unità and walk up).
The Miramare Castle is really close to the ICTP and is open every day
from 9.am to 7 p.m. However the park is open until 17:00 in Oct and
Nov. There is a free- guided tour of the park every Sunday at 11.30 and
2.30 p.m. Entrance ticket to the Castle 4 euro (show your ICTP badge in
order to have a reduction for entry). For more info:

The Duino Castle is without doubt among one of the most attractive
castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e
Tasso royal family. It was recently opened up to the public for the
first time. From its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing
village and is surrounded by extensive gardens. Inside, you can see
the furnishings, pictures, books and mementoes collected over
centuries. There is also the exhibition of Rainer Maria Rilke " The
Poet And His Angels", from 22nd July to 21st October a collection of
documents, photographs (some of which depict the poet himself),
manuscripts and a biography of the poet. Rilke was a guest at Duino
Castle in 1912 and wrote the famous poems " Elegie Duinesi".
Opening hours: 09:30 to 16:00 until the end of Oct. Closed Tuesday.

Guided Tours of the Synagogue on Sundays at the following hours:

MUSIC and CONCERTS
Symphony Music at the Verdi Theatre: Friday 20:30 and Sunday 17:30,
Brahms( concerto in re maggiore) and Dvorak (symphony 9, Nuovo Mondo),
directed by Marko Letonja For more info and tickets check:

under 26: 5 euro (gallery seats) for performances on Friday, Saturday
or Sunday.
"Wunderkammer" at the Sartorio Museum on Sunday 21st at 20.30 is a
festival of classical 16th and 17th century music. The concert's
programme is a repertoire of a variety of musics performed by the trio
Roberto Gini, Mario Martinoli and Marco Angilella.
Concert at the Chiesa di Sant' Apollinario (Montuzza Church) in Via
Capitolina 14, on Sunday at 20:30, Michele Veronese plays the baroque
violoncello and Manuel Tomadin the cymbal.
THE CARSO
The Grotta Gigante or Giant Cave
The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world. It is
situated on the Triestine Karst (Carso), half an hour from the city
center. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum,
constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the
slightest movements of the earth's crust. You can easily get there by
bus 42 from the Central Train Station in Trieste and get off at Borgo
Grotta-Sgonico.Visiting hours from 10 a.m to16:00. Entrance ticket:
Euro 8,50/person or Euro 4,50/person for a group of 15.
La Napoleonica or Napoleon's path, panoramic walk overlooking the city.
Take the Tram to Opicina from Piazza Oberdan or take bus 4 to the
"Obelisco" and go walking or jogging on the Napoleonica (Napoleon's
path), at the end you will find a parking area and at this point, you
can take path number 12 (marked by C.A.I - Italian Alpine Club) and
reach the Temple of Monte Grisa, return to Opicina through the Via
Crucis path (number 12) and finally return to the Obelisk and take the
bus back to the city. (Approx. 2 hours for the whole tour, 1 hour only
for "Napoleon's" path).
Hiking in Val Rosandra
The Val Rosandra Valley encloses a remarkable natural environment and a
walk through its paths, and by the stream and natural ponds, surrounded
by typical Carsic vegetation is worth it, provided you have a good
supply of water with you as it can be very hot this season. Make sure
you have good sneakers on.
Walk along colour-marked footpaths, each marked by CAI (Italian Alpine
Club), ranging from very easy paths to others that require some
ability. There are easily accessible caves for speleologist and
archaeology lovers. You can reach the Valley by taking Bus 40 from the
Central Train Station in Trieste and get off in Bagnoli della
Rosandra.The excursion may last around 3 hours.
The Joseph Ressel path in Basovizza
This is an interesting and innovative way to learn about the Carso
woods, fauna, plants, and geology. This walk is one of the first in
Europe to be equipped with infrared transmitters system that will give
you vocal info in English Italian or Slovene regarding environmental
and historical peculiarities of the Carso territory. A receiver can be
collected at no charge at the "Centro didattico naturalistico"
(naturalistic educational centre) located at the entrance of the town
of Basovizza (Via Gruden 34). You can reach the town of Basovizza by
city Bus 51 from Trieste Train Station. For more info see

Carsiana Botanical Garden: 21 October at 16:00 special guided tours on
the botanical characteristics of certain plants used in recipes.
Opening hours: Sat, Sun 10-13 and 15-19. Following this date the
botanical garden will be open upon request for guided school tours in
Nov. Take Bus 42 from Piazza Oberdan up to Prosecco and proceed with

CAFES, FOOD AND WINE
Trieste's historical cafes: The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and
the San Marco Cafe '(Via Battisti 13) are places where writers,
intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art
exhibits and musical evenings are held there.
Best ice cream in town: Gelateria Zampolli, in via Ghega near the train
station or in Viale XX Settembre, where ice creams are made in the
traditional way with over 68 flavours.
Best Buffet in town: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3: a typical
old-fashioned fast food bar with a Mittel-European atmosphere. You can
have excellent ham sandwiches at the bar, or enjoy the special house
dish; a variety of cold cuts served with sauerkraut and freshly grated
horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Recently reviewed by
the New York Times as the best in the Region.
Best chocolate and pastry shop: "Pasticceria Orocolato" in Via Cassa di
Risparmio nr 9.
Excellent pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty "
style: " La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre. (Near Piazza San Antonio)
and " Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used
to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in
Italy.
Agriturismo or Farm House Restaurants:
Milic, Localita' Sgonico (Sagrado) in the Carso, offers exellent local
wines and typical Carso specialities (mainly soups, grilled meats, home
made gnocchi and pasta) tel: 040 327120. Take Bus 46 from Trieste Train
Station.
Mezza Luna, in Duino Aurisina (Malchina), wide range of meat
specialities, own production of goat cheese, omelettes, good selection

43 from Duino.
Al Pescaturismo, at the Villaggio del Pescatore, where you are served
fresh fish and seafood. Phone: 339 6390473. Take Bus 73 from Sistiana.

On Sunday 21 October, Flea market in Trieste's town centre. All sorts
of antiques and bric a brac will be on sale all day in the roads of the
old town behind Piazza della Borsa near the Roman Theatre (Teatro
Romano).
Trieste Challenge 2007, Sailing Competition 18-21 Oct will take place
in front of Piazza Unità. You can admire some of the most important
sailing boats present on the International scene.
