SPECIAL EVENT: "LA BARCOLANA" on 14 OCTOBER
The most famous sailing regatta in the Mediterranean Sea! It will take 
place in the Gulf of Trieste on Sunday, 14 October at 10:00.  They have 
also set up a "Sailing Show" with kiosks and stands offering different 
kinds of sailing products, clothes, foods, and drinks on the seafront.
If you want to see this spectacular sight, there are great views from 
the Napoleonica route (bus nrs. 2 or 4 from Piazza Oberdan), Strada del 
Friuli (bus nrs. 42 or 44 from Piazza Oberdan) or just take bus nr. 36 
bus to Barcola.
Join the "Barcolana Festival" in Piazza Unità on Friday night at 20:00 
with live pop music and fireworks. On Saturday from 20:00 onwards, 
Negrita will be performing.  Entrance is free.

EXHIBITS DOWNTOWN

"Wind Emotions" at the Municipal Art Gallery in Piazza Unità, A 
photography exhibit on boats, sea, wind by Gabriele Crozzoli (10-13 e 
17-20). Open until 17 October.

"Carlo Sciarrelli - Architetto del mare" at the Sea Museum in Viale 
Campo Marzio 5. A vast collection of one of the most famous Italian 
boat architects' drafts and projects. Open 8.30 - 23.00 this week.

"Casorati, Dipingere il Silenzio", a retrospective exhibition of the 
artist's main works from the early 1900 to the 1950s, at the Revoltella 
Museum in Via Diaz 27, until 4 November.

Mascherini e la Scultura del Suo Secolo (Mascherini and the Sculpture 
of his Century). From 28th July - 14th October. A retrospective 
exhibition to commemorate Trieste's most famous 20th century sculptor, 
on the occasion of his 100th birthday. At the ex Pescheria Exhibition 
Hall, seaside front after Piazza Unità until 16 October (10:00-20:00).

MUSEUMS

The Sartorio Museum: visit the permanent collections on display (Largo 
Papa Giovanni XXIII), and the "Histria" exhibition of restored works of 
art by Paolo Veneziano and Tiepolo.  Open Mon-Fri 10-17, Sat 10-13. 
Closed on Sundays and holidays. The Sartorio Museum is situated in 
Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII (close to the Stazione Marittima,) you can 
take Bus 8. Check website: www.triestecultura.

The National Antarctica Museum: See the section on the history of 
exploration, the instruments used for the study of ice and the new 
section on the study of meteorites, films and a bookshop. Friday, 
Saturday and Sunday 9:00-13:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, via Weiss 13.

The new Paleontology room in the Natural History Museum of Trieste: You 
can see the most important discoveries made in the Triestine Karst:  
the largest skull of any living bear dating back to 300,000 years ago 
(life-size reconstruction), fossilized remains of crocodile sand 
reptiles, a complete hadrosaur skeleton of 4m long and 1.3m tall. The 
museum is in Piazza Hortis, 4. Opening hours from 8:30 -13:30, 
Tuesday-Sunday.


VISIT TRIESTE AND SURROUNDINGS

Trieste on Foot
Every day, there are guided walking tours (in Italian and English) of 
Trieste, starting at 15:00. The tour lasts 2 hours and costs 5 Euro 
(children under 12 go free).  Book your place at the Tourist Bureau 
(TURISMO FVG Trieste, in Piazza Unità). Tel. 040-3478312.

Trieste by Boat to Muggia
You can travel from the Molo Pescheria  (second dock after Piazza 
Unita') to Muggia with the"Delfino Verde" shuttle boat to visit the 
Istro-Venetian fishing village. Take advantage to admire Trieste from

bus 20 from the Train Station all the way to the center of Muggia.

The San Giusto Castle (Saint Just) built between 1470 and 1630, rises 
up from the hill in the heart of the ancient city centre of Trieste. 
You can visit the castle museum and the armoury. Outside the Castle 
walls you can also visit the cathedral built in the 14th century, and 
admire its beautiful mosaics. You can also see in the surroundings the 
remains of the ancient Roman city dating back to the first and second 
century.  Take bus 10 from the train station to Piazza Sansovino and 
walk up or go to Piazza Unità and walk up).

The Miramare Castle is really close to the ICTP and is open every day 
from 9.am to 7 p.m. There is a free- guided tour of the park every 
Sunday at 11.30 and 2.30 p.m. Entrance ticket to the Castle 4 euro 
(show your ICTP badge in order to have a reduction for entry). For more

The Duino Castle is without doubt among one of the most attractive 
castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e 
Tasso royal family.  It was recently opened up to the public for the 
first time.  From its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing 
village and is surrounded by extensive gardens.  Inside, you can see 
the furnishings, pictures, books and mementoes collected over 
centuries. There is also the exhibition of Rainer Maria Rilke " The 
Poet And His Angels", from 22nd July to 21st October a collection of 
documents, photographs (some of which depict the poet himself), 
manuscripts and a biography of the poet. Rilke was a guest at Duino 
Castle in 1912 and wrote the famous poems " Elegie Duinesi".
Opening hours: 09:30 to 17:30.  Closed Tuesday. Take bus 51 (the

MUSIC and CONCERTS

SYMPHONY MUSIC AT THE TEATRO VERDI:  Debussy (Prelude à l'après-midi 
d'un faune), Ravel ( concerto in sol maggiore pianoforte and 
orchestra), Berlioz ( Symphonie Fantastique op 14). The Verdi Orchestra 
is directed by Frederic Chaslin. Friday 20:30 and Sunday 17:30. For

discount tickets for young people under 26: 5 euro (gallery seats) for 
performances on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

THE CARSO

The Grotta Gigante or Giant Cave
The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world. It is 
situated on the Triestine Karst (Carso), half an hour from the city 
center. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, 
constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the 
slightest movements of the earth's crust. You can easily get there by 
bus 42 from the Central Train Station in Trieste and get off at Borgo 
Grotta-Sgonico.Visiting hours from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. Entrance ticket: 
Euro 8,50/person or Euro 4,50/person for a group of 15.

La Napoleonica or Napoleon's path, panoramic walk overlooking the city.
Take the Tram to Opicina from Piazza Oberdan or take bus 4 to the 
"Obelisco" and go walking or jogging on the Napoleonica  (Napoleon's 
path), at the end you will find a parking area and at this point, you 
can take path number 12 (marked by C.A.I - Italian Alpine Club) and 
reach the Temple of Monte Grisa, return to Opicina through the Via 
Crucis path (number 12) and finally return to the Obelisk and take the 
bus back to the city. (Approx. 2 hours for the whole tour, 1 hour only 
for  "Napoleon's" path).

Hiking in Val Rosandra
The Val Rosandra Valley encloses a remarkable natural environment and a 
walk through its paths, and by the stream and natural ponds, surrounded 
by typical Carsic vegetation is worth it, provided you have a good 
supply of water with you as it can be very hot this season. Make sure 
you have good sneakers on.
Walk along colour-marked footpaths, each marked by CAI (Italian Alpine 
Club), ranging from very easy paths to others that require some 
ability. There are easily accessible caves for speleologist and 
archaeology lovers. You can reach the Valley by taking Bus 40 from the 
Central Train Station in Trieste and get off in Bagnoli della 
Rosandra.The excursion may last around 3 hours.


The Joseph Ressel path in Basovizza
This is an interesting and innovative way to learn about the Carso 
woods, fauna, plants, and geology. This walk is one of the first in 
Europe to be equipped with infrared transmitters system that will give 
you vocal info in English Italian or Slovene regarding environmental 
and historical peculiarities of the Carso territory. A receiver can be 
collected at no charge at the "Centro didattico naturalistico" 
(naturalistic educational centre) located at the entrance of the town 
of Basovizza (Via Gruden 34). You can reach the town of Basovizza by 
city Bus 51 from Trieste Train Station. For more info see

Carsiana Botanical Garden: Last day 14 October. Meeting with Vesna 
Gustin, an expert on traditions, culture and culinary art of the Carso 
at 14:00 and at 15;00 and 16:00, special guided tours on the botanical 
characteristics of certain plants used in recipes. Opening hours: Sat, 
Sun 10-13 and 15-19. Following this date the botanical garden will be 
open upon request for guided school tours in Nov. Take Bus 42 from 
Piazza Oberdan up to Prosecco and proceed with Bus 46 to Sgonico. For

CAFES, FOOD AND WINE

Trieste's historical cafes:  The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and 
the San Marco Cafe '(Via Battisti 13) are places where writers, 
intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art 
exhibits and musical evenings are held there.
Best ice cream in town: Gelateria Zampolli, in via Ghega near the train 
station or in Viale XX Settembre, where ice creams are made in the 
traditional way with over 68 flavours.
Best Buffet in town: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3: a typical 
old-fashioned fast food bar with a Mittel-European atmosphere. You can 
have excellent ham sandwiches at the bar, or enjoy the special house 
dish; a variety of cold cuts served with sauerkraut and freshly grated 
horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Recently reviewed by 
the New York Times as the best in the Region.
Best chocolate and pastry shop: "Pasticceria Orocolato" in Via Cassa di 
Risparmio nr 9.
Excellent pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty " 
style: " La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre. (Near Piazza San Antonio) 
and " Pasticceria Pirona"  in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used 
to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in 
Italy.


Agriturismo or Farm House Restaurants:
Milic, Localita' Sgonico (Sagrado) in the Carso, offers exellent local 
wines and typical Carso specialities (mainly soups, grilled meats, home 
made gnocchi and pasta) tel: 040 327120. Take Bus 46 from Trieste Train 
Station.
Mezza Luna, in Duino Aurisina (Malchina), wide range of meat 
specialities, own production of goat cheese, omelettes, good selection 
of wines. Phone: 040-291529, see website www.mezzalunanet.it. Take Bus 
43 from Duino.
Al Pescaturismo, at the Villaggio del Pescatore, where you are served 
fresh fish and seafood. Phone:  339 6390473. Take Bus 73 from Sistiana.

OTHER EVENTS

On Sunday 14 October, there will be a special edition of the Flea 
market in Trieste's town centre.  All sorts of antiques and bric a brac 
will be on sale all day in the roads of the old town behind Piazza 
della Borsa near the Roman Theatre (Teatro Romano).

There will also be a Flea market in Muggia in Piazza della Repubblica 
on Sunday 14 October from 8:00 to sunset.

World Road Running Championships in Udine on Sunday 14th. This event is 
considered the most important athletics championship in Europe. This 
year, Udine is the host city. The Mass Race will start at 8:30 and at 
10:00 Opening Ceremony. At 10:30 Men's world Championships followed by 
the women's race at noon. There will be a series of collateral 
activities, all located in Udine's main square ( Piazza 1 Maggio). The 
main theme linking all the sports and cultural events is solidarity and 
integration among peoples. You can reach Udine by APT bus nr. 51 (one 
hour).
