Ljubojev: "How to love one's land, origins, cultural heritage..." at

A PAINTRESS IN MIRAMARE: Colour and Light in Charlotte's Paintings.

MUSEUMS

The Sartorio Museum: visit the Permanent Collections on display in
Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII (close to the Natural History museum, 6 mins.
walk from Piazza Unità), and the "Histria" exhibition of restored works
of art by Paolo Veneziano and Tiepolo. Open Tuesdays- Sundays:
9:00-17:00, closed on Mondays. You can get there with buses 30 or 8.

The Revoltella Museum and Modern Art Gallery in Via Diaz 27. Baron
Pasquale Revoltella donated his beautifully furnished 19th century
palazzo to the Trieste City Council with the intention of turning it
into a modern art gallery. Bus 30 or bus 8, opening hours
9:00-13:30/16:00-19:00, Sun 10:00-19:00. Entrance ticket Eur 5,00. For

EXCURSIONS: TRIESTE AND SURROUNDINGS
Trieste on Foot
There are guided walking tours (in Italian and English) of Trieste on
weekends and public holidays, starting at 15:00. The tour lasts 2 hours
and costs 5 Euro (children under 12 go free). Book your place at the
Tourist Bureau (TURISMO FVG Trieste, in Piazza Unità). Tel.

Trieste by Boat to Muggia
You can travel from the Molo Pescheria (second dock after Piazza
Unita') to Muggia with the "Delfino Verde" shuttle boat to visit the
Istro-Venetian fishing village. Take advantage to admire Trieste from
the sea. See the following web site for timetables and prices:

20 from the Train Station all the way to the center of Muggia.
The San Giusto Castle (Saint Just) built between 1470 and 1630, rises
up from the hill in the heart of the ancient city centre of Trieste.
You can visit the Sala Caprin and the armoury. Outside the Castle walls
you can also visit the cathedral built in the 14th century, and admire
its beautiful mosaics. You can also see in the surroundings the remains
of the ancient Roman city dating back to the first and second century.

The Miramare Castle is really close to the ICTP and is open every day
9:00-19:00. However the park is open until 17:00 in Oct and Nov. There
is a free-guided tour of the park every Sunday at 11:30 and 13:30.
Entrance ticket to the Castle Eur 4,00 (show your ICTP badge in order

The Duino Castle is without doubt among one of the most attractive
castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e
Tasso royal family. It was recently opened up to the public for the
first time. From its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing
village and is surrounded by extensive gardens. Inside, you can see the
furnishings, pictures, books and mementoes collected over centuries.
Opening hours: 09:30 to 16:00. Closed Tuesday. Take bus 51 (the airport
bus) or city bus 44 from Piazza Oberdan. To arrange a guided tour

Faro della Vittoria (Victory Lighthouse) built by the famous Triestine
architect Berlam. It is a commemorative monument dedicated to the
fallen of the First World War. Visiting hours only on Sundays
10:00-15:00. Bus 42 or 44 from Train Station in Trieste.
Guided Tours of the Synagogue on Sundays at the following hours:
10:00,11:00 and 12:00 in via San Francesco, near Piazza Oberdan.
EXCURSIONS IN THE CARSO
The Grotta Gigante or Giant Cave
The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world. It is
situated on the Triestine Karst (Carso), half an hour from the city
center. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum,
constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the
slightest movements of the earth's crust. You can easily get there by
bus 42 from the Central Train Station in Trieste and get off at Borgo
Grotta-Sgonico. Visiting hours 10:00-16:00. Entrance ticket: Eur
8.50/person or Eur 4.50/person for a group of 15.
La Napoleonica or Napoleon's path, panoramic walk overlooking the city.
Take bus 4 to the "Obelisco" from Piazza Oberdan and go walking or
jogging on the Napoleonica (Napoleon's path), at the end you will find
a parking area and at this point, you can take path number 12 (marked
by C.A.I - Italian Alpine Club) and reach the Temple of Monte Grisa,
return to Opicina through the Via Crucis path (number 12) and finally
return to the Obelisk and take the bus back to the city. (Approx. 2
hours for the whole tour, 1 hour only for "Napoleon's" path).
CAFES, FOOD AND WINE
Trieste's historical cafes: The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and
the San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) are places where writers,
intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art
exhibits and musical evenings are held there.
Best Buffet in town: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3: a typical
old-fashioned fast food bar with a Mittel-European atmosphere. You can
have excellent ham sandwiches at the bar, or enjoy the special house
dish; a variety of cold cuts served with sauerkraut and freshly grated
horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Recently reviewed by
the New York Times as the best of the kind in the Region.
Best chocolate and pastry shop: "Pasticceria Orocolato" in Via Cassa di
Risparmio nr 9.
Excellent pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty"
style: "La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre. (Near Piazza San Antonio)
and "Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used
to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in
Italy.
Agriturismo or Farm House Restaurants:
Milic, Localita' Sgonico (Sagrado) in the Carso, offers excellent local
wines and typical Carso specialties (mainly soups, grilled meats, home
made gnocchi and pasta) tel: 040.327120. Take Bus 46 from Trieste Train
Station.
Mezza Luna, in Duino Aurisina (Malchina), wide range of meat
specialities, own production of goat cheese, omelettes, good selection

Running, jogging or just walking!
Barcola has a 7 km seaside promenade.
The "Basovizza Ring" in the Carso has a 5 km circular ring but you can
also run in the paths in the woods. You can reach Basovizza by city bus
51 from the Train Station in Trieste.
Bowling: There is a Bowling Centre in Duino at "the Ristorante Pizzeria
Bowling Duino" open daily and at night. Check website
