18TH GENERAL MEETING
TWAS - THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES FOR THE DEVELOPING WORLD
13-14 NOVEMBER 2007
ICTP MIRAMARE CAMPUS, TRIESTE, ITALY

TWAS - The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World - will hold its 
18th General Meeting on 13-14 November 2007 at the Abdus Salam 
International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) on the Miramare 
campus. Members of the scientific community in Trieste and the 
surrounding area may find the following events of particular interest:

Trieste Science Prize Lectures
Tuesday, 13 November, 14:30 - 16:30, ICTP's Main Lecture Hall
The winners of the 2007 Trieste Science Prize, an award sponsored by 
TWAS and illycaffè to honour the most eminent scientists in the 
developing world, will present their awards' lectures. Luis 
Herrera-Estrella, director of the National Laboratory for Genomics of 
Biodiversity and professor of plant genetic engineering at the Centre 
of Research and Advanced Studies in Irapuato, Mexico, whose research 
helped to spur the first genetically modified plants, will speak about 
the promise that such efforts hold for increasing global crop yields. 
Goverdhan Mehta, CSIR Bhatnagan fellow and honorary professor at the 
Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, will examine the role of 
creativity in studies and applications of organic synthesis, and the 
impact that such research is having on the development of natural 
products, the design of novel molecules and molecular chemistry in 
general. Mehta's efforts have led to the synthesis of more than 50 
natural products. The two scientists are sharing a US$100,000 cash 
award provided by illycaffè.

Symposium on the Status and Prospects of Science and Technology in 
Pakistan
Tuesday, 13 November, 17:00 - 19:30, ICTP's Main Lecture Hall
A group of Pakistani scientists, led by Atta-ur-Rahman, head of 
Pakistan's Federal Commission on Higher Education and former Minister 
of Science and Technology, will examine the state of science and 
technology in Pakistan. Other members of the panel include Muhmammad 
Iqbal Choudhary, H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, Karachi; 
Tasawar Hussain, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad; Navaid Malik, 
Virtual University of Lahore; Syed Qasim Mehdi, AQ Khan Research 
Laboratories, Islamabad; Amir Muhammed, National University of Computer 
and Emerging Sciences, Islamabad; and S. Riazuddin, National Centre of 
Excellence in Molecular Biology, Lahore.

Presentation by Pervez A. Hoodbhoy, chair of the Department of Physics, 
Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan
Wednesday, 14 November, 09:30 - 10:30, Kastler Lecture Room, Adriatico 
Guesthouse
Pervez A. Hoodbhoy, an internationally renowned professor of physics 
who has visited Trieste on numerous occasions and a well-known advocate 
for educational and democratic reform in Pakistan, will talk about the 
art and science of teaching science. Hoodbhoy, who chairs the physics 
department at Quaid-i-Azam University, will receive an award for his 
contributions to increasing public understanding of science in Pakistan 
and throughout the Persian Gulf region.
