EVENTS
LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL continuing at the Miela Theatre until 11
Nov. It is situated in Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi 3 (take bus 8 or walk
5 minutes from the Train Station). There are films and documentaries
witnessing the cultural, artistic, historical and social reality of
Latin America will be shown, also featuring a special retrospective on
Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Joaquim Pedro de Andrade. A special Prize in
Memory of Salvador Allende will be awarded to the best film directors
who have focused on social issues in South-American countries.

EXHIBITS DOWNTOWN
Visit the Permanent International Art collection at the ITIS (Senior
citizens' home) in via Pascoli 31 (after Ospedale Maggiore) belonging
to the United Nations of the Arts Academy. This is the first time in
Italy that this type of Institution hosts such a vast collection: 300
paintings and sculptures created by Italian and international artists
from 30 countries.
MITTLECIOK 2007 IN PIAZZA SANT'ANONIO: For Chocolate amateurs! On 8-11
Nov from 10:00-20:00. You will find many stands and kiosks around the
Sant'Antonio Church near Piazza Ponterosso offering high quality
chocolate products to taste and buy.
SAN MARTINO FAIR in Muggia: "back to rural roots."
Saturday and Sunday around Piazza Marconi, from 10:00 till night. There
will be a number of concerts, meetings and book presentations: kiosks,
food and wine.
On Sunday a flea market and a guided tour of Muggia's Castle at 11:00,
15:00 and 17:00. A concert at 16:30 performed by the Capodistria
Orchestra in Piazza Marconi.
To get there: bus nr. 20 from Piazza Oberdan.
MUSIC and CONCERTS
Saturday 10 Nov: Contemporary music with the Cantus Ensemble of
Zagabria at the San Silvestro Church in Trieste at 20:30. The Church is
situated behind Piazza Unità near the Teatro Romano.
Sunday 11 November at 17:30 Concert for cymbal and transverse flute at
the Monastero delle Monache Benedettine (Monastery), in via delle

MUSEUMS
The following website gives details of all museums in Trieste and the

The Sartorio Museum: visit the permanent collections on display (Largo
Papa Giovanni XXIII), and the "Histria" exhibition of restored works of
art by Paolo Veneziano and Tiepolo. Open Mon-Fri 10-17, Sat 10-13.
Closed on Sundays and holidays. The Sartorio Museum is situated in
Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII (close to the Stazione Marittima,) you can
take Bus 8. Check website: www.triestecultura.
The Revoltella Museum and Modern Art Gallery in Via Diaz nr.27. Baron
Pasquale Revoltella donated his beautifully furnished 19th century
palazzo to Trieste city council for it to become a modern art gallery.
(Bus 30 or Bus 8). Opening hours 9:00-13:30/16:00-19:00 and Sun

The Museum of Oriental Art. The museum is situated in an 18th century
palazzo and is the only one in the Region dedicated to oriental art. It
houses collections of art, travel mementoes, arms and instruments from
China and Japan. (Bus 24 from Train Station). Opening hours 9:00-13:00.
VISIT TRIESTE AND SURROUNDINGS
Trieste on Foot
There are guided walking tours (in Italian and English) of Trieste on
weekends and public holidays, starting at 15:00. The tour lasts 2 hours
and costs 5 Euro (children under 12 go free). Book your place at the
Tourist Bureau (TURISMO FVG Trieste, in Piazza Unità). Tel.

Trieste by Boat to Muggia
You can travel from the Molo Pescheria (second dock after Piazza
Unita') to Muggia with the "Delfino Verde" shuttle boat to visit the
Istro-Venetian fishing village. Take advantage to admire Trieste from

Have a look at Muggia on: http://www.muggia.info/. (You can also take
bus 20 from the Train Station all the way to the center of Muggia.
The San Giusto Castle (Saint Just) built between 1470 and 1630, rises
up from the hill in the heart of the ancient city centre of Trieste.
You can visit the Sala Caprin and the armoury. Outside the Castle walls
you can also visit the cathedral built in the 14th century, and admire
its beautiful mosaics. You can also see in the surroundings the remains
of the ancient Roman city dating back to the first and second century.
Opening hours: from Monday to Sunday 9:00-17:00. Take bus 24 from the

The Miramare Castle is really close to the ICTP and is open every day
from 9.am to 7 p.m. However the park is open until 17:00 in Oct and
Nov. There is a free- guided tour of the park every Sunday at 11.30 and
2.30 p.m. Entrance ticket to the Castle 4 euro (show your ICTP badge in
order to have a reduction for entry). For more info:

The Duino Castle is without doubt among one of the most attractive
castles in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e
Tasso royal family. It was recently opened up to the public for the
first time. From its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing
village and is surrounded by extensive gardens. Inside, you can see
the furnishings, pictures, books and mementoes collected over
centuries.
Opening hours: 09:30 to 16:00. Closed Tuesday. Take bus 51 (the airport
bus) or city bus 44 from Piazza Oberdan. To arrange a guided tour

Visit the Faro della Vittoria (The Victory Lighthouse) built by the
famous Triestine architect Berlam. It is a commemorative monument
dedicated to the fallen of the First World War. Visiting hours only on
Sundays from 10:00-15:00. Bus 42 or 44 from Train Station in Trieste.
Guided Tours of the Synagogue on Sundays at the following hours:
10:00,11:00 and 12 :00 (Via San Francesco, near Piazza Oberdan).
THE CARSO
The Grotta Gigante or Giant Cave
The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world. It is
situated on the Triestine Karst (Carso), half an hour from the city
center. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum,
constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the
slightest movements of the earth's crust. You can easily get there by
bus 42 from the Central Train Station in Trieste and get off at Borgo
Grotta-Sgonico.Visiting hours from 10 a.m to16:00. Entrance ticket:
Euro 8,50/person or Euro 4,50/person for a group of 15.
La Napoleonica or Napoleon's path, panoramic walk overlooking the city.
Take the Tram to Opicina from Piazza Oberdan or take bus 4 to the
"Obelisco" and go walking or jogging on the Napoleonica (Napoleon's
path), at the end you will find a parking area and at this point, you
can take path number 12 (marked by C.A.I - Italian Alpine Club) and
reach the Temple of Monte Grisa, return to Opicina through the Via
Crucis path (number 12) and finally return to the Obelisk and take the
bus back to the city. (Approx. 2 hours for the whole tour, 1 hour only
for "Napoleon's" path).
Hiking in Val Rosandra
The Val Rosandra Valley encloses a remarkable natural environment and a
walk through its paths, and by the stream and natural ponds, surrounded
by typical Carsic vegetation is worth it, provided you have a good
supply of water with you as it can be very hot this season. Make sure
you have good sneakers on.
Walk along colour-marked footpaths, each marked by CAI (Italian Alpine
Club), ranging from very easy paths to others that require some
ability. There are easily accessible caves for speleologist and
archaeology lovers. You can reach the Valley by taking Bus 40 from the
Central Train Station in Trieste and get off in Bagnoli della
Rosandra.The excursion may last around 3 hours.
The Joseph Ressel path in Basovizza
This is an interesting and innovative way to learn about the Carso
woods, fauna, plants, and geology. This walk is one of the first in
Europe to be equipped with infrared transmitters system that will give
you vocal info in English Italian or Slovene regarding environmental
and historical peculiarities of the Carso territory. A receiver can be
collected at no charge at the "Centro didattico naturalistico"
(naturalistic educational centre) located at the entrance of the town
of Basovizza (Via Gruden 34). You can reach the town of Basovizza by
city Bus 51 from Trieste Train Station. For more info see

CAFES, FOOD AND WINE
Trieste's historical cafes: The Tommaseo Cafe' (Riva 3 Novembre) and
the San Marco Cafe' (Via Battisti 13) are places where writers,
intellectuals and artists still meet. Presentation of books, art
exhibits and musical evenings are held there.
Best ice cream in town: Gelateria Zampolli, in via Ghega near the train
station or in Viale XX Settembre, where ice creams are made in the
traditional way with over 68 flavours.
Best Buffet in town: "Da Pepi", via Cassa di Risparmio nr 3: a typical
old-fashioned fast food bar with a Mittel-European atmosphere. You can
have excellent ham sandwiches at the bar, or enjoy the special house
dish; a variety of cold cuts served with sauerkraut and freshly grated
horseradish. Good selection of wines and beers. Recently reviewed by
the New York Times as the best in the Region.
Best chocolate and pastry shop: "Pasticceria Orocolato" in Via Cassa di
Risparmio nr 9.
Excellent pastry shops, dating back to 1850, decorated in "Liberty"
style: "La Bomboniera" in via XXX Ottobre. (Near Piazza San Antonio)
and "Pasticceria Pirona" in Largo Barriera 12, where James Joyce used
to be a customer. Pirona won a prize for the best hot chocolate in
Italy.
Agriturismo or Farm House Restaurants:
Milic, Localita' Sgonico (Sagrado) in the Carso, offers exellent local
wines and typical Carso specialities (mainly soups, grilled meats, home
made gnocchi and pasta) tel: 040 327120. Take Bus 46 from Trieste Train
Station.
Mezza Luna, in Duino Aurisina (Malchina), wide range of meat
specialities, own production of goat cheese, omelettes, good selection
of wines. Phone: 040-291529, see website www.mezzalunanet.it. Take Bus
43 from Duino.
Al Pescaturismo, at the Villaggio del Pescatore, where you are served
fresh fish and seafood. Phone: 339 6390473. Take Bus 73 from Sistiana.
Open in winter from 2 to 26 December, closed in January and opens again
in February. Best to call before booking.

The "Bruno Bianchi" swimming pool situated in Passeggio Sant'Andrea nr

The Acquamarina swimming pool (smaller but has heated sea water)
situated in Molo Fratelli Bandiera (Bus 8). Opening hours Fri
7:40-14:20/15:20-22:00, Sat 7:40-11:/ 15:40-19:40 and Sun 7:40-13:00.

Running, jogging or just walking!
Barcola has a 7 km seaside promenade.
The "Basovizza Ring" in the Carso has a 5 km circular ring but you can
also take wood paths. You can reach Basovizza by city bus 51 from the
Train Station in Trieste.
Bowling: There is a Bowling Center in Duino at "the Ristorante Pizzeria
Bowling Duino" open daily and at night. Check website
