GORIZIA
Gorizia lies about 40 minutes from ICTP by car, and can easily be
reached by train. It is a very interesting town with a rich history
and lots to see and do. Read more here in English:

This weekend, from 23-25 March, the Pollice Verde (Green Fingers) Fair
is taking place at the Fiera in Gorizia. There will be stalls and
demonstrations of all things to do with gardens, the environment and
the outdoors as well as activities for children. Free entrance each
day from 10:00-20:00. More info from www.udinegoriziafiere.it.
Until 15 April, there is an important art exhibition taking place in
the Musei Provinciali (Borgo Castello 13 - 0481-533926) of paintings
and sculptures by contemporary Slovenian artists from 1945-2000.
Until 28 April, the Gorizia Jazz Festival will be taking place. On
Saturday 24 March at 20:45 at the Auditorium in via Roma, there will be
a concert by Carlos Maza and Nelson Veras. More information about the

Duino Castle

Duino castle is without doubt among one of the most attractive castles
in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso
royal family. It was recently opened up to the public for the first
time. From its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing village
and is surrounded by extensive gardens. Inside, you can see the
furnishings, pictures, books and mementoes collected over centuries.

You can reach Duino easily by the blue APT bus 51 (the airport bus), or
the number 44 orange bus from Piazza Oberdan. Once there you can also
take in some of the breathtaking views from the Rilke cliff top
pathway, and take a walk down to the pretty harbour.
A new exhibition (I sentieri della psiche nella scrittura) opening
Friday 16 March will display manuscripts by the German poet Rilke, with
an analysis of his handwriting. There will also be a collection of
antique pens on loan from the Parker and Waterman Museum. Open until
17 May 2007.
New exhibition in the Sala Leonardo (Palazzo Gopcevich, via Rossini,
4), entitled Lo sguardo sul Mare. A collection of prints of Trieste
and the sea. Daily until 9 April 2007 from 9-19. Free entrance.
Until 15 April 2007 at the Museo postale e telegrafico della
Mitteleuropa (piazza V. Veneto), there is an interesting exhibition
which details the history of the postal service in the area, with
collections from Italy, Austria and Germany. Monday-Saturday 9-13.

In the Biblioteca Statale (Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII, 6) there will be
the inauguration of an exhibition of the works of local artist Rossanna
Longo. Open until 31 March, Mon-Fri 9-18, Sat 9-13, Sun closed. Free
entrance.
An exhibition of watercolours by the artists Tanja Kralj and Flavia
Laurenti will be inaugurated tomorrow, 10 March at 20:00 in the Milko
Bambic gallery in Opicina (via di Prosecco 131). Free entrance daily
until 24 March from 10-12 and 17-19. You can reach Opicina by taking
the historic tram from opposite piazza Oberdan. There are some
breathtaking views to be taken in, especially on a clear day. If, for
some unforeseen breakdown, the tram is not running, Bus 4 leaves from
the same place and goes up to Opicina.
C H I L D R E N's A C T I V I T I E S
L'Immaginario Scientifico
This science museum (located on the ground floor level of the Adriatico
Hotel, entrance at the rear of the hotel, opposite the 36 bus stop) has
exhibits which are particularly suitable for children.
A children's laboratory will be held on Sunday from 15.45-16.45 for
those aged 4-7 and from 15:30-17:00 for 8-11 year olds. This week the
younger group will be making maracas. You can book by e-mail at

This Sunday 25 March, there will also be two meetings, at 11:00 and
18:00, dedicated to ecology and the environment.
C I N E M A
Teatro Miela
On Sunday 25 March, at 10:00, there will be a showing of the film
"Robin and Marian" with Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Shaw and
Richard Harris. The journalist Pierluigi Sabatti will speak on the
subject "La maturita' della vita nel cinema". Free entrance.
F A I R S & M A R K E T S
Trieste in Fiore
Until 25 March, in Viale XX settembre, there will be the annual flower
market. This year there will also be some stalls selling typical food
from all over Italy.
M U S I C & C O N C E R T S
Charity country & western evening
On Friday 23 March at 20:00 at the railway station in Aurisina, there
will be an evening of music and dancing with a country and western
theme, entitled Far West my Love, in aid of charity (the Pineta del
Carso hospice). There will be live music, a buffet, and demonstrations
of the basic dance steps. Free entrance. All donations collected will
go towards the creation of a winter garden for the patients of the
hospice.
Weekend al Verdi
On Sunday 25 March at 11, in the Sala Victor de Sabata at the Teatro
Verdi, the Chamber Music group of the Orchestra of the Teatro Verdi
will play a selection of pieces by Bach and Mozart. Tickets cost 7
euro (5 euro reduced price for young people) and can be booked by
calling 800-054525.
S P O R T
Swimming
Trieste offers several possibilities for swimmers. More information, in
English, on all the local swimming facilities (including the pools also
in Altura, Monfalcone and nearby Slovenia) can be found on the

Remember to take a swimming cap with you, as it is obligatory in all
structures!
The nearby seaside resort of Grado is nice to visit, with its
historical centre, basilica and roman remains. You can read about the

also has a great indoor spa pool (more information in Italian on the
site: http://www.gradoit.it/home_turista.html).
If you don't have a car, the best way to get to Grado is by bus. The
APT number 21 bus goes direct to Grado leaving the bus station in
Trieste at 7.50 on weekdays and Saturdays and 8.00 on Sundays (it
reaches Grignano bus stop about 5-10 minutes later). The return from
Grado bus station is 14.15 Monday-Saturday and 18.50 on Sundays.
T O U R S
Trieste on Foot
Until 1 April, every Saturday and Sunday, there are guided walking
tours (in Italian and English) of Trieste, starting at 15:00. Book
your place at the Tourist Bureau (TURISMO FVG Trieste) in Piazza
Unita). Tel. 040-3478312.
Trieste by Bus
Every Saturday a bus leaves for a tour of Trieste from in front of the
train station at 14.00. It takes in all of the main sights to see
downtown, and there is also a 30-minute stop at St. Giusto Castle,
where you can walk along the Castle walls or visit the Cathedral or
simply enjoy the spectacular views. Tickets may be bought in the Sala
Eurostar in the main railway station and cost 5.20 Euro, with children
under 10 travelling free.
Trieste by Boat
You can travel from the Molo Pescheria to Muggia and visit the
Istro-Venetian fishing village. Take advantage to admire Trieste from
