after New York and Santo Domingo. Its light beam is visible for 36

(bus 42 or 44 from piazza Oberdan stops right outside), you can visit
the lighthouse daily from 9-11 and 16-18. Free entrance.
The Synagogue
For the first time, guided tours are being given of Trieste's
Synagogue, which is one of the largest in Europe. Interestingly, the
Berlam brothers, who were the architects of the Faro della Vittoria
also designed the Synagogue. Tours take place three times per week on
Monday, Wednesday and Sunday, and can be booked by calling 040-6726736

Duino Castle
http://www.castellodiduino.it/en-index.htm
Duino castle is without doubt among one of the most attractive castles
in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso
royal family. It was recently opened up to the public for the first
time. From its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing village
and is surrounded by extensive gardens. Inside, you can see the
furnishings, pictures, books and mementoes collected over centuries.
Opening times: 09:30 to 17:30. Closed Tuesday.
To arrange a guided tour telephone: 040 208120
Please show your badge in order to have a reduced entrance price.
You can reach Duino easily by the blue APT bus 51 (the airport bus), or
the number 44 orange bus from Piazza Oberdan. Once there you can also
take in some of the breathtaking views from the Rilke cliff top
pathway, and take a walk down to the pretty harbour.
The current exhibition (I sentieri della psiche nella scrittura)
displays manuscripts by the German poet Rilke, with an analysis of his
handwriting. There will also be a collection of antique pens on loan
from the Parker and Waterman Museum. Open until 17 May 2007.

Seaside resort: GRADO
The nearby seaside resort of Grado is nice to visit, with its
historical centre, basilica and roman remains. You can read about the
town (in English) on the site: http://www.gravo.com/estor.html. If the
weather isn't warm enough for the beach, Grado also has a great indoor
spa pool (more information in Italian on the site:
http://www.gradoit.it/home_turista.html).
If you don't have a car, the best way to get to Grado is by bus. The
APT number 21 bus goes direct to Grado leaving the bus station in
Trieste at 7.50 on weekdays and Saturdays and 8.00 on Sundays (it
reaches Grignano bus stop about 5-10 minutes later). The return from
Grado bus station is 14.15 Monday-Saturday and 18.50 on Sundays.
