SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEKEND:

"La Notte dei Saldi":Big Summer Sale in Trieste. Shops will remain open  
this Saturday until midnight. There will be music and entertainment in  
the open air (Gospel concert in Piazza Sant'Antonio at 9 p.m Sunday  
8th).

Conferences and lectures on Joyce at the newly inaugurated "Joyce  
School" in the Auditorium of the Museo Revoltella in Trieste Friday 6th  
and Saturday 7th.

"Onde Mediterranee"," Mediterranean Waves": Music and entertainment in  
Monfalcone's main square, Piazza della Repubblica:  (Bus 51) Friday 6th  
Anglo-Indain music with "Dhol Foundation", Saturday night at 11p.m

Margherita Hack, in Grado, on Friday 6th , 6 p.m gives a talk on the  
book she wrote  "Cosi' parlano le stelle. Il cosmo spiegato ai ragazzi"  
in collaboration with a young albanian student from the United World  
College.

T O U R S
Trieste on Foot
Every day, there are guided walking tours (in Italian and English) of  
Trieste, starting at 16:30.  It lasts 2 hours and costs 5 Euro  
(children under 12 go free).  Book your place at the Tourist Bureau  
(TURISMO FVG Trieste) in Piazza Unita'). Tel. 040-3478312.
Trieste by Boat to Muggia
You can travel from the Molo Pescheria to Muggia and visit the  
Istro-Venetian fishing village. Take advantage to admire Trieste from

bus 20 from the Train Station all the way to the center of Muggia.)
Trieste by Bus
You can take a tour every Saturday at 14.00 in front of the Train  
Station in Piazza Liberta. The tour lasts 2 hours and takes you around  
the city's main monuments and sights. There is a 30 minutes stop at the  
San Giusto Castle. For more information call Consorzio Promotrieste,  
tel: 040305308. Ticket costs 5 Euros for adults and is free for  
children under 10.


Duino Castle

Duino castle is without doubt among one of the most attractive castles  
in Europe and is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso  
royal family.  It was recently opened up to the public for the first  
time.  From its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing village  
and is surrounded by extensive gardens.  Inside, you can see the  
furnishings, pictures, books and mementoes collected over centuries.  
Please show your badge in order to have a reduced entrance price.
Opening hours: 09:30 to 17:30.  Closed Tuesday. To arrange a guided

GRADO & AQUILEIA.
The nearby seaside resort of Grado is nice to visit, with its  
historical centre, basilica and roman remains.  You can read about the  
town (in English) on the site: http://www.gravo.com/estor.html.  If the  
weather isn't warm enough for the beach, Grado also has a great indoor  
spa pool (more information in Italian on the site:  
http://www.gradoit.it/home_turista.html).
If you don't have a car, the best way to get to Grado is by bus.  The  
APT number 21 bus goes direct to Grado leaving the bus station in  
Trieste at 7.50 on weekdays and Saturdays and 8.00 on Sundays (it  
reaches Grignano bus stop about 5-10 minutes later).  The return from  
Grado bus station is 14.15 Monday-Saturday and 18.50 on Sundays. From  
Grado you can reach the beautiful town of Aquileia,  an ancient roman  
town at the head of the Adriatic, at the edge of the lagoons, founded  
in 181 B.C. It was the starting point of several important roads  
leading to the north-eastern portion of the Roman Empire. Its Cathedral  
is one of the most important edifices of Christianity.  For more info:

Carsiana Botanical Garden
The local Carsiana botanical garden, which offers visitors a beautiful  
selection of the typical local fauna, to be found among the vegetation  
in Carso (karst) has opened to the public for the season.  Until 15  
October, the opening hours will be Tue-Fri 10-13, Sat, Sun and public  
holidays 10-13 and 15-19.  It's closed on Mondays.  Guided tours take  
place at 16:00 and 17:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. You can find all

Hicking in Val Rosandra
The whole of the Rosandra Valley is walked along a grid of  
colour-marked footpaths, each marked by CAI (Italian Alpine Club),  
ranging from the very easy paths to others that require a certain  
ability.There are easily accessible caves for speleology and  
archaeology lovers.You can reach the Valley by taking bus 40 from the  
Central Train Station in Trieste and get off in Bagnoli della Rosandra.
The Grotta Gigante or Giant Cave
The cave is considered the largest tourist cave in the world. It is  
situated on the Triestine Karst (Carso), half an hour from the city  
center. An exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum,  
constructed by university researchers in order to calculate the  
slightest movements of the earth's crust. You can easily get there by  
bus 42 from the Central Train Station in Trieste and get off at Borgo  
Grotta-Sgonico.Visiting hours from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. Entrance ticket:  
Euro 8,50/person  or Euro 4,50/person for a group of 15..

Flea Market and Live Music in Sistiana.
Beach area "La Caravella",  every Friday from 18.00 to 23.00 stroll  
around the stands and spend a nice evening near the seaport.There are a  
variety of bars and discos in the open air. Daytime bus 51 to Sistiana  
town and bus 73 down to  Sistiana Bay. On Saturday, there is a special  
night bus from Piazza Oberdan to Sistiana leaving at the following  
hours: 22.30-23.30-23.45 and returning from Sistiana at  
0.45-2.20-2.50-4.05. The bus is free but has no intermediate stops  
between Sistiana and Piazza Oberdan.


AND FOR THOSE WHO LOVE SPORTS

There are a number of interesting bike tours with different itineraries  
( From the Carso Plateau to the Sea or " The First Great War" or " the  
dissapearing river"). You can rent a mountain-bike by calling 0039

C H I L D R E N   A C T I V I T I E S.

New activity for children: ADVENTURE PARK.
Hicking, climbing, mountainbike...in Duino-Aurisina, Ceroglie.
How to get there:  Follow the road signs to Sistiana, then head towards  
Visogliano, follow the indications to Campo Sportivo and finally you'll  
get to Ceroglie. Opening hours: July, August and September from 10.00  
a.m to 7 p.m . Entrance fee for activities: 8 Euro for children and 18

L'Immaginario Scientifico
This science museum (located on the ground floor level of the Adriatico  
Hotel, entrance at the rear of the hotel, opposite the 36 bus stop) has  
exhibits which are particularly suitable for children.  It is open on  
Sunday from 10-20.
