Through the ages, the concept of symmetry has increased in richness and
played an important role. In this lecture I will confine considerations
to the role of symmetry in art, and, in particular, to two ornamental
techniques. Reference will be made to historical examples of the
systematic use of these techniques, from ancient times to the Islamic
art up to the graphic work of M. C. Escher.
The art works of Professor Ghirardi - "The Periodic Tarots" - will be
exhibited in the MB hall. They consist of 31tableaux that represent an
hypothetical Tarot deck painted during the Seventies with acrylic
colours which have been recently transferred, via a photographic
technique, on supports of 31,5 x 50 cm. His choice to resort to a
tessellation procedure with identical tiles, procedure used by Arab
artists for ornamental purposes and representing the fundamental
artistic canon of the well-known engravings of the great Dutch graphic
artist, m. C. Escher, has been carried out to stress the pervasivity of
the images. Each image symbolizes a crucial moment of the psychological
evolution of all individuals leading to their maturity. This technique
requires mastering, for artistic purposes, an extremely refined
mathematical procedure based on group theory.
The exhibition will be displayed until the end of this week.
Everyone is welcome to join in the Colloquim.
